Streamlining regulation while protecting fish passage – it’s win-win! 🥳🐟 Fisheries Queensland is making it easier to deliver essential infrastructure while continuing to protect our critical native fish habitats. Recent amendments to the Queensland waterways for waterway barrier works mapping will simplify and streamline regulation and provide greater flexibility for development projects in Western Queensland. 🤝 We’ve reclassified the Condamine-Balonne, Moonie and Border rivers drainage basins as western waterways to reduce accepted development requirements, and we’ve reduced the number of channels in braided waterways that require development approvals. These updates will open more options under accepted development requirements in western regions to facilitate the maintenance and construction of essential community infrastructure, while preserving vital passage for native fish to complete their life cycle. For more information on how to view the mapping, the data used to create the mapping, and frequently asked questions about how the amendments will apply to current and future developments, visit our website 👉 https://brnw.ch/21wXT6n

Our latest research on Queensland’s iconic giant mud crab has us shell-ebrating the results! 🦀 🎣 With the help of commercial crabbers and recreational fishers, our scientists have completed their analysis of approximately 20,000 giant mud crabs sampled from along the east coast of Queensland and the Gulf of Carpentaria. And it's good news for fishers and seafood consumers – we're thrilled to report that current management policies are effectively supporting sustainable harvest levels in Queensland waters! This means our male minimum legal size and no-female harvest policies are doing a great job at protecting our mud crab populations as well as ensuring a sustainable supply of fresh, local-caught seafood for consumers. Now that’s claws for celebration! 👏 View the final results 👉 https://brnw.ch/21wXP8s. This research project was co-funded by the Australian Government through the FRDC - Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, in collaboration with CQUniversity, NSW Agriculture and Fisheries NSW.

We’re helping to ensure the best quality mangoes for everyone to enjoy this summer! 🥭☀️ Our support for the mango industry continues with the release of the updated Mango Quality Assessment Manual. This assessment and diagnostic tool provides a standard method and shared language to improve communication about mango quality along the supply chain — from the farm to the retail shelf. The manual is part of the Serviced Supply Chains II (AM21000) project, supported by Hort Innovation, and will help the industry monitor and enhance practices to deliver consistent, high-quality Australian mangoes to consumers. With this updated resource, we’re helping growers, suppliers and retailers deliver the delicious mangoes Australians love.
The second edition of the Mango Quality Assessment Manual is now available, providing the Australian mango industry with an updated and practical guide for assessing post-harvest fruit quality. 🔗Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gD-CVh5X Originally developed by Rowland Holmes, Peter Hofman, and Leigh Barker (2009), the updated edition revised by Andrew Macnish and Hung Duong from the Department of Primary Industries (Queensland) features new and expanded photographic examples and clearer guidance for identifying and managing quality issues. These enhancements support growers, packers, marketers, and researchers in maintaining the high standards and consumer confidence in Australian mangoes.

The event brought together more than 100 delegates from Australia and New Zealand, including representatives from: 🔹 federal and state government agencies 🔹 local councils 🔹 research institutions and universities 🔹 community groups. Over 3 days, participants shared invaluable insights on invasive ants: 💡 prevention and preparedness 💡 surveillance and treatment tools and techniques 💡 engagement strategies 💡 compliance measures 💡 innovative management and eradication approaches. The symposium provided a vital opportunity for delegates to connect, share lessons and strengthen both national and international collaboration. The success of this inaugural event will pave the way for the next symposium, where we’ll continue building partnerships, sharing knowledge and advancing efforts to protect our environment, economy and way of life from invasive ants.
