About us

The Department of Housing and Public Works is focused on improving the lives of Queenslanders by creating pathways to safe, secure, and affordable housing. We work towards this goal by offering housing assistance to eligible Queenslanders through government-owned and -managed social housing, as well as funding registered providers of community and local government-managed social housing. We also provide funding to organisations that assist people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The social housing system is designed to ensure people in need receive appropriate housing and are supported by pathways that build and sustain independence. Improving housing affordability, reducing homelessness, and assisting Queenslanders to access the private housing market are key priorities. • “This week helps people better empathise with and appreciate each other. It promotes fairness and equality for everyone.” This Disability Action Week, we're proud to celebrate staff like Adam—a QBuild team member whose 40+ year career has been defined by resilience, inclusion, and innovation. Since starting out as a QBuild apprentice carpenter, Adam’s career has taken him across Queensland on many large-scale projects, making invaluable contributions to job sites in South East Queensland, Far North Queensland, and South Western Queensland. Adam now works and thrives in an operational support role with QBuild’s Sunshine Coast district team. Adam is deaf and Auslan is his preferred language. He and his colleagues use QChat, the Queensland Government's AI-powered virtual assistant, to translate emails and messages into Auslan gloss to create a more inclusive and accessible workplace. 👏

  • We’re delivering award-winning social homes! As part of the Logan City Council's Logan Urban Design Awards, this Underwood Social Housing project received the Responsive and Resilient Award and the Overall Logan Urban Design Award 2025. Expertly designed by Archipelago, the 9 homes in this project offer the perfect balance of comfort, community connection and privacy. Constructed with robust, low-maintenance materials and thoughtfully connected by a central garden spine, the homes foster neighbourhood connections within a beautifully cultivated landscape. Thank you to everyone involved in this project! We’re excited to deliver more homes that set the standard not only for innovative urban design, but also for social housing across the state. • As part of our disability housing action plan, we’re building more homes for Queenslanders with disability. Some units, like Cheryl’s, are built with wheelchair users in mind. “Partnering for inclusive housing with Queenslanders with disability 2024-2027" sets out a joint vision for the Queensland Government's commitment to provide more inclusive, accessible and well-designed homes for people with disability. By working towards this vision, we can ensure that people like Cheryl live independently and safely in communities that meet their needs. Queenslanders with Disability Network led the co-design process for our action plan so the voices and experiences of people with disability could be reflected on every page. • With 12 years of experience in our department, Andrea brings expertise and empathy to her role as an occupational therapist at Chermside’s Housing Service Centre. Andrea helps assess social homes to make them more accessible for a person’s health and disability needs. “It’s not just about housing,” she says. “It’s about helping people thrive in their home.” One of Andrea’s most rewarding moments was helping a social housing tenant with declining mobility transition into a safer, more suitable home. “She felt supported, heard, and didn’t feel like she was doing this alone.” This Disability Action Week, we’re sharing Andrea’s story as a powerful reminder of how person-centred housing solutions can promote independence, inclusion, and opportunity.

  • Housing Officer Emily helped Sue find a new home in Rockhampton! Sue had originally applied for social housing in Toowoomba. But after celebrating her 70th birthday in Rockhampton with her 2 daughters, 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, Sue decided this was the place for her and asked for her application to be transferred. “Emily was just beautiful,” Sue says. “She could have done anything more for me. I didn’t think I’d be able to get a place, and I didn’t believe it when she rang with the news.” Sue has now settled into a social housing complex and is looking forward to spending more time with her family and getting involved with the community. “It’s a dream come true,” she says. • Our Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) program has delivered its first ever 2-storey modular homes! As part of 12x new modular homes for Bundaberg, we partnered with Hutchinson Builders for the manufacturing and site works of 6x 2-storey modular homes built to Class 2 buildings (apartments) under the National Construction Code. Designed as the “missing middle” housing solution, multi-storey modular homes were engineered in close consultation with the construction industry. These Bundaberg homes were built with meticulous precision before being carefully lifted into place using a 160-tonne crane! The remaining 6x single-storey modular homes were expertly built at the Rapid Accommodation and Apprenticeship Centre (RAAC) in Eagle Farm, Brisbane. This project was made possible thanks to the QBuild South East Queensland RAAC team and local partners including Hutchinson Builders and Ergon Energy Network.

  • “We’re ready to create great partnerships to deliver great projects on the ground.” Julie Saunders, CEO of CHIA Queensland, attended our recent industry briefing for the Queensland Community Housing Investment Pipeline (Q-CHIP) and was pleased to see how industry feedback helped develop a clear pathway for community housing providers. “It is a great, tangible funding mechanism that will get projects on the ground and will get tenants in homes sooner—and that’s what we need here in Queensland,” Julie says. Through Q-CHIP, we’ll fund community housing providers to build, renew and grow social and community housing. Together, we’ll work towards the Queensland Government’s goal of delivering 53,500 new social and community homes across the state by 2044.
