    It has been a pleasure welcoming so many people into the ParkLife 2 Display over the past few weeks. Enabled by HIP V. HYPE with architecture by Austin Maynard Architects, ParkLife 2 is the result of our best work yet. Located at 427 Albert Street in Brunswick, ParkLife 2 is a building that takes climate resilience seriously, but never forgets that homes should be a joy to live in. Powered by 100% renewable energy with a high performance building envelope, a home at ParkLife 2 will be more comfortable, have cleaner air and cost less to operate. The ParkLife 2 Display is open for personal appointments, but not for much longer! We will be closing and relocating at the end of the year in preparation for construction to get underway on site.     Penny and Jad first met Liam on an international study tour of alternative housing models within Europe, exploring innovation, community and future flexibility. We share common values and a belief in the power of ‘Good Ordinary’. We're pleased to have supported Silvester Fuller in their pattern for the NSW Housing Pattern Book, providing development and sustainability advice for their scheme: Large Lot Apartments 01. The project defines a repeatable housing template, one that delivers comfortable, safe homes with high amenity; affordable to build, affordable to live in and ultimately, desirable to residents, developers and authorities alike.     From buildings that contribute positively to the environment to strategies that set up urban precincts for success over time, Liam Wallis and Paul Himberger joined panels at the Architecture & Design Sustainability Summit yesterday in Sydney to explore how we can design for long-term environmental and social benefit.

    Energising day yesterday getting the chance to join a panel at the Sustainability Summit in Sydney! Also bringing our Melbourne groove with HIP V. HYPE founder Liam Wallis speaking (this time about regenerative design through the lens of a rafting trip down the Franklin). 10 days in a raft without mobile phones seems like a damn good way to solve some problems and gain consensus – regardless of your views. There was definitely a shift in the narrative across all the sessions; clearer focus and a move into action. Thoughts from the day: 💡  Changing the narrative from affordable housing to affordable living. At the moment in industry, focusing on the former strips out sustainability, while the latter encourages it. 💡  Moving from the ‘fields’ to the ‘yards’. Greenfield and brownfield are no longer working. Let’s find the backyards (density and canopy), schoolyards (shared open space and recreation) and railyards (close access to transport and disused space) to balance amenity with location. 💡  Focusing too much on the risk of action and ignoring the risk of inaction - this has to change. Shifting mindsets and the way we collaborate or approach problems can unlock opportunities. 💡  We need to start measuring success through stories. Not just dollars and cents. Success should be whether people are using the places we design and build, whether the flora and fauna are coming back to our landscape and if people are genuinely better off from what we have enabled. 💡 The always entertaining Saul Griffith calling out those with the most means (financial, political or otherwise) to drive change that aren’t doing anything as ‘Planet F'ing Hypocrites’. The broader message being that we need to work to find ways to reduce inequality and ensure everyone benefits as we transition to a low carbon economy. So many of the people at the Summit are out there changing the story for the better, taking the risks and addressing the fundamental needs of people, but we aren't going fast enough. We need collaborators, folks willing to take the big swing and those that aren't deterred by failure.     Sustainable real estate... is it worth it? Liam Wallis joins Georgia Warren-Myers, Rob Quadara, David Harrap and Steffen Welsch tomorrow night (Tuesday 18 NOV) in Carlton for a discussion on the commercial potential of climate-responsive development. Drawing on both research insights and real-world experience, the panel will examine how environmentally sustainable design (ESD) can evolve from compliance to a profitable driver of real-estate value, revealing both the current challenges and emerging opportunities for the sector.     Congratulations to Gavin Ashley and Paul Himberger, who have been appointed to the Green Building Council of Australia’s Expert Reference Panels for Sustainable Precincts and Resilience respectively. These panels bring together leading experts to ensure standards such as Green Star are technically robust and promote best practice. The Sustainable Precincts panel will continue work on the implementation and transition to Green Star Communities v2, development of sector-specific resources and integration of sustainability outcomes in planning policy. The Resilience panel will focus on issues related to climate change adaptation, community and infrastructure resilience, and other emerging challenges.     Great to see the Sustainable Subdivisions Framework, which HIP V. HYPE helped develop, evolve into BESS Subdivisions. A big step forward in embedding sustainability across Victoria’s new communities. Simon Blackwell and the Better Cities & Regions team are already well underway using the Tool, using it to assess sustainability for subdivision projects from small to very large..! Congratulations to all involved. 👏

    I’m not sure if it’s weird to feel emotionally attached to a sustainable planning framework…? 🤷🏻♂️ It does feel like I’ve shared some good years with the Sustainable Subdivisions Framework (SSF) thought! 😘 > From first hearing about the draft SSF circa 2021, and spending my weekend reading it from start to finish… >> to landing the job of implementing the SSF on behalf of the Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance for two years… >>> then joining HIP V. HYPE, who played an instrumental role in developing the original SSF… >>>> to leading HV.H’s team on the recently appointed project to support 7 Victorian councils to roll out the SSF on major structure planning and subdivision applications. It’s been a journey! So I was more than a little bit proud to see the SSF looking all grown-up last week, as it launches into the world as BESS Subdivisions (Built Environment Sustainability Scorecard for Subdivisions)! 🎉🍻👏 Having used the new BESS Subdivisions online assessment tool, I can say that this is a game-changer for assessing the sustainability of new subdivision developments! Congratulations to Bridie Guy -who’s journey with the SSF dwarfs mine- and who’s energy has moved the framework from an idea to a reality; to Natasha Palich and the Council Alliance for a Sustainable Built Environment (CASBE) team for facilitating the evolution; and the many others who’ve played a part along the way. 🚀 Check out the new BESS Subdivisions tool and let me know what you think! 🚀 —- Footnote: the SSF is a framework designed to embed sustainability within the design and delivery of new communities in Victoria, through the planning approval process.
