Yesterday marked the date of National Close the Gap day. At Kentish Playgroup, we reflected on Closing the Gap Day in a meaningful, hands-on way. The children participated in a special activity where they learned how to make natural soap using Black Wattle leaves—connecting culture, self-care, and community knowledge. It’s one small step, but every step counts. Closing the Gap Day is about recognising that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to face significant inequalities. In the Northern Territory, 26.3% of our population are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. So, what can we do? We can start by being informed. We can continue to listen, learn, support, and ensure the spaces we create for children and families are inclusive, safe, and culturally strong. #ClosingTheGap

  • Congratulations Sarah Fowler and the Kentish Community Services team. Your patience and persistence with the PALMS Early Childhood program has come to fruition. How exciting for the parents and carers in Katherine to be able to access more places at your Early Learning Centre.

Three years in the making to get to this day. My heart is full of love and admiration for the PNG people who were brave enough to take this huge step and be part of the PALMs early childhood pilot ❤️ Thank you for having trust in me. Today was the beginning of an important journey. The PALMS Early Childhood pilot represents a significant opportunity for Pacific Islanders to work and train in Australia’s highly regulated early childhood sector. These educators will play a vital role in contributing to the economy and the livability of the Northern Territory. They will be based in regional areas of the NT, where there is a critical shortage of Early Childhood Educators. The presence of our Katherine-based PALMS educators, Janet, Wilma, Erika, Hellen, Banita, and Shirley, will enable the creation of an additional 40 childcare places, offering much needed support to parents eager to rejoin the workforce. This initiative will also provide essential service personnel the confidence to relocate to Katherine, knowing that reliable childcare options are available for their children.
