MCCSA’s culturalQ Coordinator, Hanaa Grave, recently contributed to the 58th Australian Association of Gerontology Conference in Alice Springs, centred on this year’s theme, Ageing at the Centre. Hanaa highlighted a vital truth: diversity is the norm in Australia, and multiculturalism is now our mainstream, shaping everyday life for all of us. To support ageing well, this diversity must be reflected in our systems, practices, policies, and research. For many years, ‘cultural awareness’ has been the dominant approach in the sector, but it has clear limitations. Awareness alone cannot improve client experiences, reduce staff burnout, or create lasting inclusion. Individual Cultural Intelligence and organisational Cultural Competence address these gaps by providing the capabilities and frameworks needed to make inclusion practical and systemic, equipping individuals and organisations to deliver culturally safe, person-centred care. Yesterday I had the pleasure of delivering a CulturalQ session for the SA Health Young Professionals Group together with my colleague Somi Lindsay. I walked away feeling genuinely hopeful. The openness, curiosity and emotional intelligence of this new generation is something special. Their willingness to reflect, challenge themselves and grow is exactly what our workplaces and communities need. Thank you to everyone who took part and contributed so thoughtfully. At today's Best Practice and CALD Workforce Engagement for Aged Care session (co-hosted by MCCSA, Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland and Ethnic Communities' Council of NSW), mediator and HR manager Mary Ellen Doyle posed a challenging question to attending leaders: "If a camera recorded you for 10 minutes under stress, what would it record?" When deadlines loom and challenges mount, our unguarded responses reveal who we truly are as leaders (rather than whom we aspire to be). Mary Ellen's insights on self-awareness in leadership reminded us that our teams are constantly observing how we handle stress. Whether we realise it or not, we're modelling behaviour every day. Do we remain calm and solution-focused, or do we become reactive? What would that camera record of your leadership under pressure? Mary Ellen was joining Anita Bonanno, Head of Community Services – Co.As.It. Sydney, and Grant Clonan, General Manager of Diversicare, in a conversation facilitated by Marisa Galiazzo from LPA Consulting. Thank you to everyone for your excellent, practical insights.
