I remember the day I was standing with Oliver Thessman and we were watching Annastacia Palaszczuk announce on the news in Maryborough that Downer had won this project, both the Torbanlea and Ormeau sites. Why were we watching it in the middle of a work day? Well this press conference meant 1 of 2 things. 1️⃣ Our 2 years of hard work was about to be recognised 2️⃣ Our 2 years of hard work was not going to see the light of day Downer being announced that day meant that WSP in Australia had won it, which meant... yes you got it... PDT Architects were going to be designing these brilliant facilities. You have to be the right kind of team to take these projects on and do them well. It is intricate, challenging, difficult work that needs people who are 💡 highly motivated 💡 highly intelligent 💡 highly communicative to get it done right! So congrats to our guys, you have been incredible! The Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) will build 65 new six-car passenger trains at a purpose-built manufacturing facility at Torbanlea in the Fraser Coast region. Once manufacturing begins in 2026, QTMP trains will benefit from: 👷♀️👷♂️ Local expertise: The floor, walls and roof and bogies of each train will be built by a local workforce to meet the highest standards in design and performance. Each bogie frame is made from more than 100 individual parts. ✅ Rigorous testing: Before entering service, every train undergoes water ingress and dynamic testing on specially laid tracks. ♿ Enhanced accessibility: Feedback from our co-design process with the disability sector has shaped the design to ensure the QTMP trains will be the most accessible trains in Queensland when in service. This week, our own Oliver Thessman joined a panel of industry professionals for Property Leaders Brisbane Event: The Big Debate - Do You Add Value? Ollie represented the architectural perspective to make the case for how Architects add value to every project, alongside The Project Manager Andrew Lowther, Gallagher Jeffs The Town Planner Sophie Lam, Urbis The Engineer Toby Chalmers, IPS (Infrastructure Project Solutions) And moderated by Quantity Surveyor Matthew Mackey FRICS Ollie shared his insights into the unique role Architects play in shaping successful outcomes: • Translating ambition and constraints into coherent, buildable solutions • Managing complexity through listening, testing, visualising, and refining ideas • Acting as the central communicator between disciplines - connecting clients, engineers, planners, and project managers • Maintaining design intent while balancing technical and regulatory demands • Bringing emotional intelligence and integrity to navigate real-world challenges • Championing collaboration and mutual respect, because great projects rely on every discipline’s strengths The debate sparked plenty of laughs (and a few friendly digs), but ultimately reinforced what we all know, the best results come from collaboration, curiosity, and shared respect across the industry. Thanks to SHAPE Australia for hosting and sponsoring such a fantastic event, Property Leaders Brisbane for bringing together the industry for an entertaining and insightful evening, and the other panellists for their perspectives and friendly banter. A few snaps from the night, including Ollie balancing all the hats that Architects juggle! #pdt #pdtarchitects #architecture #interiordesign #design #brisbanedesigner #brisbane #architecturequeensland #designqueensland #australianarchitecture #architectureanddesign #thebigdebate #networking #teamwork #collaboration
