Australia’s aged care sector is under pressure. With an ageing population and a shortage of services, the challenge is growing. A new Aged Care Act introduced last month aims to help older Australians stay independent – but policymakers require evidence to predict its impact. That’s why Professor Nadine Andrew is set to lead a $1.5M National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) funded project with Peninsula Health and Monash University under the National Centre for Healthy Ageing (NCHA) to build a population dataset and simulation platform. This will enable evidence-based policy decisions and help more Australians live well at home for longer. Healthy ageing starts with informed policy - to read more about the project, head to the link in the comments.

Congratulations to Adjunct A/Prof Kerryn Rubin, Kate Andrews and our mental health team, who have been presented with the award for Excellence in Mental Health and Wellbeing, at the 2025 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards. Peninsula Health was recognised for the Elimination of seclusion and mechanical restraints in our inpatient services – which was achieved thanks to leadership commitment, cultural change, workforce development, and continuous evaluation. Seclusion and mechanical restraints have been eliminated in our inpatients mental health service for three years. And it’s not just beneficial to patients - occupational violence and incidents of workplace injuries and aggression have decreased, and there have been improvements in psychological safety and wellbeing for staff, alongside enhanced quality of care. Well done, we are so proud of our team.

From tackling gastro outbreaks to boosting education and training for our clinical teams, Dr David Lister, Peninsula Health’s new Head of Infectious Diseases, is leading the way in keeping our community safe. Dr Lister’s passion for infectious diseases began during his final university placement in Uganda. The experience inspired a lifelong dedication to public health, infectious diseases and humanitarian work - expertise he now brings to Peninsula Health. In his new role, Dr Lister is focused on strengthening our infection prevention and control surveillance systems and helping teams and specialties across our health service collaborate more closely. “Many of our goals are shared - from preventing infections after surgery, to caring for patients with complex needs and supporting our community through local outbreaks. Our priority is always improving patient outcomes,” he says. #Healthcare #Infectiousdiseases #Publichealth #PeninsulaHealth

Peninsula Health was recently recognised in two categories at the ADF Employer Support Awards. The awards acknowledge businesses and organisations for their support of employees involved in defence work – releasing them for military service when requested. Nurse Educator Glenn Matthews, also a Medical Warrant Officer in the Reserves, attended the ceremony along with Executive Director Strategy, Capital and Digital Paul Butler. “The ADF provides a lot of not just medical training but also leadership training,” says Glenn. “I can directly use what I've learned from defence in my education role and everything I learn here medically I take back to defence. So it's very good synergistic way of working.”
