Last week, we were privileged to co-host Navigating Uncertainty: From Reliance to Resilience with the QUT Centre for Justice and the Queensland Disaster Research Alliance (QDRA). The event brought together more than 130 attendees from across academia, industry, and government — all committed to strengthening community resilience and disaster preparedness. Professor Amisha Mehta (Lead, Resilient Communities and Infrastructure Theme, QUT Centre for Environment & Society) opened the day as MC, setting the scene for a dynamic and insightful discussion. We were honoured to have Professor Vivienne Tippett, Chair of the QDRA, guide the panel conversation with expertise and depth. Panel experts included: • Cr Matt Constance – Councillor, City of Moreton Bay & Chair, Local Disaster Management Group • Jimmy Scott – General Manager, Resilience & Recovery, Queensland Reconstruction Authority • Melinda McInturff – Community Resilience Coordinator, Community Plus+ • David Grant – Meteorologist, Queensland State Disaster Coordination Centre, Bureau of Meteorology • George Hodgson – Director, National Emergency Management Agency • Kate Retzki – Director, Research & Communications, Office of the Inspector-General Emergency Management • Dr Monica Taylor – Lecturer, QUT School of Law Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to meaningful conversations about resilience, risk reduction and the future of disaster-ready communities. #Engagement #QUT #Research #Disaster #Emergency #Resilience #QDRA #BOM #MBRC QUT (Queensland University of Technology), Kym Mansfield, Xanthe Ashburner, Tara Horner, Sarah Kramer, Julie Mitchell, Lynne MULVENEY-BURNS, Bridget Xavier, Scott Bryan, Articulous Communications

It was great to host our panel session on flood resilience at the Hydrology and Water Symposium in Canberra today. I was joined by our amazing panelists Amisha Mehta Steve Muncaster and Christopher Pickett-Heaps. We widely discussed flood resilience and application of research. Key discussion points included: - Addressing worsening natural hazard risk via risk based land use planning and planning for community relocation. - Opportunities to improve flood readiness through the adoption of new research on seasonal flood outlooks. - Enhancing flood risk communication to enhance community decision making. Much is needed, but there was no doubt in the commitment of participants to address future challenges. Congratulations to QUT Centre for Environment and Society Research Fellow Frankie Cho on this award. Frankie is doing really groundbreaking work on managing environmental and economic systems under uncertainty. Very well deserved!
🎉 We are delighted to announce that Dr. Frankie Cho, QUT (Queensland University of Technology) has been selected as a co-winner of the 2026 Emerging Scholar Plenary Award. Despite only one year of postdoctoral research experience, Frankie has already built an exceptional track record. His work includes multiple PNAS publications, the development of R packages used by practitioners, and applied experience that brings a strong real-world perspective to modelling. His research combines theoretical depth with practical relevance, making it an outstanding example of the kind of impactful modelling the Resource Modeling Association seeks to highlight through this award. As a 2026 Emerging Scholar Plenary Award winner, Frankie will deliver a plenary lecture at WCNRM 2026, held 30 June to 3 July in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Title: Natural resource management strategies must be robust to uncertainties Abstract: Many natural resource managers try to find the best strategies to balance human needs and natural resource extraction by solving complex mathematical problems. These strategies, however, often ignore the vast uncertainties behind our understanding of natural systems. In this talk, I show that even simple perturbations to our uncertain modelled ecosystems can have drastic effects on the effectiveness of natural resource management strategies. These uncertainties affect everything from what our best actions for managing natural resources are, to how we quantify the value of new information that resolves these uncertainties. My talk also demonstrates new tools for how natural resource managers can begin to explicitly account for uncertainty in their decisions, paving the way forward for robust natural resource management strategies that work across a wide range of possible futures. We hope you will join us in celebrating Frankie’s achievements and in hearing this exciting plenary at WCNRM 2026. Registration opens soon. Frankie will deliver his keynote address alongside co-winner Charlotte Gerling, followed by presentations from all finalists for the award. Special session proposals are encouraged and due by 23 November. Special thanks to Cang Hui, Chair of the WCNRM 2026 Organising Committee, and to the Scientific Committee for their work in selecting the award winner. https://lnkd.in/geP-w7uA #WCNRM2026 #ResourceModeling #EmergingScholar #Uncertainty #DecisionScience #NaturalResourceManagement Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science

A lot of kudos to Phoebe for making this short documentary a compelling story, beautifully presented in just 11 minutes. Phoebe Hart Zoe Mellick
Associate Professor at Queensland University of Technology & Principal at Hartflicker Moving Pictures
Our documentary has been featured in The Sydney Morning Herald. Lauren Ironmonger really captures the scale of the problem, not just here in Australia, but around the world. We are working on getting the research journal publication out now, and the film’s also being entered into festivals. Let me know your thoughts. 🦘 #CES #Researcher Profile Jonathan Rhodes Climate change and habitat loss are two of the most critical drivers of the global decline in biodiversity. The planet faces challenges of how to protect and restore biodiversity under these threats. Jonathan uses data science and spatial models to ask questions about which policy and management choices work best to address this challenge. 🎥 Watch him talk about his research!
