Testament to the work and commitment of Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association and specialist medical colleges on growing the workforce is seeing the large number of indigenous specialists and specialists in training serving the community in regional and rural training sites. Very proud as President of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians to yarn with some of our amazing female paediatricians/ registrars who are stepping up into leadership roles e.g. chairing the RACP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Board committee Dr Kimberley Male

Day One at the AIDA Conference 2025 on Gadigal Country, Sydney — and already feeling uplifted and grateful. It’s been so special reconnecting with people I haven’t seen since last year — mentors, colleagues, and friends who continue to inspire the work I do. There’s nothing quite like being surrounded by a community that genuinely cares and pushes each other forward. This year is extra meaningful because I get to share it with my mumma and my baby boy. Balancing medicine and motherhood isn’t always easy, but moments like today make it feel incredibly worth it. Three generations walking this journey together is something I’ll never take for granted. Excited for what the rest of the conference holds — if day one is anything to go by, we’re in for something truly special. The theme of this year’s Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association (AIDA) Conference “Evoking Sovereignty, Honouring Country, Nurturing Community “is both timely and powerful. It reminds us that health is inseparable from culture, land, and self- determination. True sovereignty is not only political; it lives in the right to define health on your own terms, to practise medicine informed by culture, and to care for Country as Country cares for us. For the RACP, this conference holds profound significance. It offers a vital space for reflection, learning, and partnership. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees and Fellows bring immeasurable strength to our College leading change, shaping policy, and reminding us, that justice, equity and excellence are inseparable. Their work transforms not just clinical outcomes, but the moral and cultural fabric of our profession. Since its establishment in 1997, the AIDA has played a defining role in reshaping Australia’s medical landscape. AIDA’s vision to achieve health equity and cultural safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continues to inspire generations. Its advocacy has ensured that Indigenous voices are not only heard but lead the national conversation on health reform, medical education, and reconciliation within our health systems. The RACP stands proudly alongside AIDA on this ongoing journey. We share a commitment to addressing the enduring impacts of colonisation, to embedding cultural safety in medical practice, and to supporting Indigenous doctors who bring unique wisdom, strength, and cultural authority to the profession. As conference attendees gather on Gadigal land, we hope that together, we renew our shared purpose: to evoke sovereignty through action, to honour country through respect and reciprocity, and to nurture community through care, compassion, and collaboration. Together, we walk the path toward a future where Indigenous health is not a goal, but a lived reality, strong, sovereign, and self-determined. https://lnkd.in/djRsXtQE
