St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne is the proud recipient of the 2025 Premier’s Large Health Service Award, the highest recognition a health service can receive in Victoria!    Presented at last night’s Victorian Public Healthcare Awards, this award reflects the tremendous efforts of everyone across St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and affirms our commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, compassionate care. It is a collective achievement, that wouldn’t have been possible without our more than 7000 staff, who demonstrate unwavering dedication to our patients, residents, clients and communities.    St Vincent’s was also proud to be a finalist in two other categories, with the Better Health and Housing Program nominated for the Excellence in values-based healthcare category, and our Minimum Category Three triage for First Nations patients in the ED initiative, a finalist for Excellence in Aboriginal health and wellbeing.   A heartfelt thank you to everyone at St Vincent’s for their contribution, and to our partners, supporters, and our patients and families who entrust us with their care.

As hubs, they will connect integrated care throughout the community, taking on even more important roles, not just in their local areas, but across the state and nationally. Change is coming. This is a powerful article about how St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne has tailored its Emergency Department care for First Nations patients and how it has helped close the gap in wait times between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people without affecting overall patient flow. We’re glad to have the support of the Australian Medical Association (NSW), Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association, Australasian College for Emergency Medicine , The Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Australian Nursing & Midwifery Federation (Victorian Branch) and the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) in this important work. Delivering specialised care to the most vulnerable groups in our community is a core part of our work, and we will continue taking steps to achieve the best health outcomes for all our patients. It was an exciting day for our team at St Vincent's Health Australia  as we joined GenesisCare to mark the start of construction on a new radiation therapy centre at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee.   Once complete in mid-2026, the centre will expand access to high-quality, evidence-based cancer care for communities across Melbourne’s west.   This new facility will complement St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee’s existing surgery and medical oncology services, creating one of the most comprehensive oncology offerings in the region.   Thank you to Wyndham City Council's Cr Susan McIntyre for joining us to celebrate this important milestone. St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne’s Australian-first clinical trial of psychedelic-assisted therapy is the topic of a new documentary film, titled Edge of Life, being released in certain cinemas nationally from 13 November 2025. During the trial, St Vincent’s clinician researchers Dr Marg Ross and Dr Justin Dwyer worked with Emmy award-winning filmmaker Lynette Wallworth, who followed two terminally ill trial participants as they navigated their psilocybin-assisted therapy. Today we’re celebrating World Radiography Day, recognising the vital work of our radiographers, nuclear medicine technologists and radiation therapists here at St Vincent’s.  From diagnosing illness to guiding treatment, their expertise and compassion play a crucial role in delivering better and fairer care. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) team recently visited St Vincent’s Care Services resident, Ade and her daughter, Meiko to hear about their experience within the aged care system. Ade and Meiko spoke warmly of their care at St Vincent’s, but acknowledged the challenges that come with moving a family member into care. AI in healthcare is evolving fast. From home-care robots to clinical chatbots, new technologies are transforming the way care is delivered across Australia. “Clients still receive a weekly face-to-face meeting, but between these meetings … the [AI] system allows a daily check-in, which can then escalate any potential concerns to either our team or a client’s family,” said Dean Jones, National Director of St Vincent’s At Home to The Guardian Australia. It’s been a big week, with a lot said about my hospital, my colleagues, and the work we do. I just want to say I’m incredibly proud of St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and our team. Having a policy that is evidence-based, best practice in terms of delivering equitable healthcare, and driven by our St Vincent’s values, brought down by misinformation and ignorance has been very disappointing and upsetting. But I have to say, alongside the vitriol, it’s been amazing to also receive such warm support from across the health sector – in Victoria and across Australia – from clinicians, administrators, and policymakers. People who understand what we’re doing and back us. I’m very grateful. I thought I’d finish the week by setting the record straight on St Vincent’s Melbourne’s approach to supporting health outcomes among First Nations patients who present to our Emergency Department. Why we introduced the policy we have; what impact it’s had; and addressing some of the misinformation and distortion that’s out there. We found at St Vincent’s that First Nations patients were three times more likely than non-Indigenous patients to leave our ED without being seen. They were also waiting, on average, three times longer compared to non-Indigenous patients. We worked with the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service and others – including First Nations staff and patients – to implement what’s known as a Minimum Category Three Triage policy. Under our policy, we decided to assign a minimum Category 3 to all First Nations patients so they would begin their treatment more promptly. It’s worked without compromising care for patients presenting with a serious or life-threatening emergency – regardless of their background – or upsetting overall ED flow.
