Opinion: In the right hands, AI can help solve the housing crisis, writes member for Wentworth Allegra Spender. Last week the NSW Housing Delivery Authority (HDA) – the body created last year to fast-track major housing approvals – reportedly stood down a senior staff member for using AI software to collate and standardise planning data. I don’t know the details beyond what I read in this masthead, and appreciate legitimate concerns around unauthorised tools and transparency – but I have to ask – is the HDA using every available tool, including AI, to speed up planning? ‘We are not selling out’: El Jannah’s new investor is a $180 billion US giant, reports Jessica Yun. Melburnians flocked to today’s opening of their $15 billion Metro Tunnel. We joined them for a ride to see how it compares to Sydney’s expanding metro network. If one were to tread delicately, writes Herald transport editor Matt O'Sullivan, the Metro Tunnel is a major step in reshaping Melbourne’s existing heavy rail network. A blunter assessment is that Sydney’s ambitious metro network overshadows Melbourne’s new rail extension in scale and new-age technology. When you ask ChatGPT about joining the navy, it tells you about the United States Navy. This is one example of the blind spots driving Sovereign Australia AI’s audacious plan to build a home-grown alternative to ChatGPT for under $100 million. “We wanted a model that understands the difference between a pair of togs and a pair of thongs, and knows that thongs aren’t underwear,” co-founder Simon Kriss said. But does the country really need it? Find out more from David Swan: https://lnkd.in/g2bpQ6Vn #AI #Australianfounders

For a rare fairytale moment in Australian politics, Jodie Haydon avoided the princess fantasy of meringue dresses and sweetheart necklines, instead choosing a dramatic long sleeved gown fit for a fashion queen from Sydney label Romance Was Born, for her wedding to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The elegant gown, with fabric-covered buttons, demonstrates the restrained artistry of designers Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales, who this year celebrated their label’s 20th anniversary at Australian Fashion Week. Analysis: The grounding of thousands of Airbus planes is expected to reverberate through the global aviation sector for days. While Jetstar and Air New Zealand passengers have been directly affected, the temporary removal of the 6000 planes from global networks for hours, if not days, will have a cascading effect, experts say.
