Replacing extractive infrastructure with living systems.

About us

At Umbrellus, we’re designing the next generation of regenerative infrastructure — rooted in care for land, community, and material innovation. Using living mycelium and agricultural byproducts, we create biodegradable trellises, modular canopy systems, and sculptural lighting that are grown, not manufactured. Our systems are designed to restore ecosystems, reduce waste, and offer elegant, climate-ready alternatives to extractive infrastructure. From vineyards and farms to urban spaces and hospitality environments, our solutions adapt to place — modular, breathable, and powered by nature. Each design integrates features like natural ventilation, solar lighting, and cradle-to-cradle material lifecycles. In partnership with RMIT University, we’re advancing scientific research and real-world applications across multiple sectors — with recent support from LaunchVic’s 2025 CivVic Labs to accelerate circular agriculture. As industries shift toward circular design and climate resilience, Umbrellus is helping shape a more beautiful, restorative future — one living system at a time. Let’s build regenerative systems that leave the earth better than we found it.

Advancing biocomposite-based infrastructure requires rigorous research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and independent verification. Over the past several months, Umbrellus has partnered with RMIT University’s Fungineers (Advanced Manufacturing & Mechatronics) to undertake material investigations into mycelium paste additive manufacturing, fire behaviour, thermomechanical response, and early composite performance using agricultural byproducts. This collaboration contributed to: - Controlled fire–response observations across multiple mycelium composites - Additive manufacturing trials using paste-extruded mycelium-based formulations - Prototype material characterisation - Practical demonstrations of scalability and production workflows - Foundational data points informing our broader LCA and FEA studies with RMIT The work presented at the Engenius Exhibition reflects the commitment of these emerging engineers to exploring regenerative materials with scientific discipline and curiosity. We extend our thanks to Jade, Omar, Rishi, Sam, and RMIT Advanced Manufacturing and Mechatronics Professor Dr Shadi Houshyar for their technical diligence and for contributing meaningful early-stage insights to the Umbrellus material pipeline. As we move into field prototyping with Victorian growers, this research collaboration continues to strengthen the scientific basis of our design decisions and our pursuit of resilient, low-impact infrastructure systems for agriculture and beyond.

  • At Umbrellus, we have been advancing our Research and Development with RMIT University through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to independently evaluate the environmental impact and structural performance of our materials, derived from agricultural byproducts and regenerative resources with a focus on mycelium composites and bamboo. Key findings 🌱 Mycelium demonstrated up to 98% reduction in carbon impact 🎋 Bamboo recorded –5.42 kg CO₂-eq/kg, confirming its carbon negative potential 💨 FEA validated that our modular canopy design can withstand winds of 50 m/s This EnGenius poster provides a snapshot of the work completed, including environmental assessments, structural modelling, and early prototypes shaping our next phase. With these results, we now progress toward manufacturing prototypes for pilot deployment across farms, vineyards, and partnered sites. Umbrellus remains committed to thoughtful design, responsible materials, and regenerative infrastructure shaped by nature and science. #Umbrellus #RegenerativeDesign #ClimateTechnology #CircularMaterials #Mycelium #Bamboo #AgTech #RMIT

I’ve always thought of myself as more of a thinker than a talker. But this year has invited me to do both: to share not only my story but also that of the women who raised me, and the purpose that continues to guide my life. Standing on stage at the State Library Victoria to receive the Lisa Ring and Family Scholarship was a moment of grace. A reminder that what begins quietly, with faith, endurance, and love, can grow into something far greater than we imagine. Umbrellus began from that place of love and frustration. From watching women like my mum and aunt, who I look up to more than anyone, create and endure with so little, and still lead with strength and honour. Their spirit continues to shape this work to build systems of dignity through design and hope through action. My deepest gratitude to StartSpace, State Library Victoria, and the Lisa Ring family for creating platforms that uplift stories like mine: stories rooted in purpose, community, and care. And a huge congratulations to my co-recipients, who are doing such important work helping clinicians personalise chemotherapy dosing, making treatment safer, more effective, and truly individual. Incredible work from the team at PredicTx Health.

Hands in. Stories over strawberries. Laughter with lampshades. We recently completed the second part of our 'Sculpting Light with Living Materials' workshop in partnership with Space2b Social Design. And it felt different in the best of ways. Women gathered in one corner, chatting softly over tea, coffee, and cut fruit. In another, heads bent over sculpted forms, hands deeply engaged in shaping light from fungi and farm waste. Someone danced with a lampshade on her head. I laughed while holding two freshly unmoulded pieces, overwhelmed by what we’ve created both in form and feeling. This workshop was about presence, and reimagining what craft can be: tactile, joyful, quiet, generous, and open to all. We worked with agricultural by-products and living mycelium. Even our wrap was compostable, made from food waste, thanks to @The Great Wrap. I keep returning to the atmosphere. The conversations. The rhythm of focused hands. The dancing. The lightness of play. Thank you to every person who joined us and made the space feel both grounded and expansive. You are shaping what Umbrellus is growing into...pun intended. We’ll be opening more workshops soon, just in time for Summer. If you’re curious about regenerative materials, circular design, or simply want to make something that grows, I’d love to hear from you 💃 🍄

Recently, we visited the RMIT University lab to dive deeper into the science behind our work, from early bio-based prototyping to exploring 3D printing techniques. A heartfelt thank you to Professor Shadi, the Bundoora Lab supervisors, and the incredible students who bring such passion to this work. Preparing for demonstrations and experimenting together has been both challenging and deeply rewarding. Working in a relatively new space like climate-adaptive infrastructure made from organic materials is far from easy, but it’s in this difficulty that the potential for real impact is revealed. These moments remind me to pause, and to imagine what becomes possible when we look more to nature for inspiration. So far, so good! Australia is known as a global hub of innovation, yet bridging the gap between research and market remains one of our greatest challenges. That’s exactly where we stand today: moving out of research with something promising. While I feel the weight of those hurdles, I’m grateful for how far we’ve come, and for the extraordinary work already achieved together. More to come. Australia’s National Climate Risk Assessment makes for sobering reading. By 2050 it projects: • $600 billion in lost property value • A 400% increase in heat-related deaths • 61% of beef cattle exposed to dangerous heat stress • 35,000 small businesses facing above-average climate risk No community is immune. The risks will be cascading, compounding, and concurrent. For me, these aren’t distant numbers but echo the realities I’ve witnessed among farmers, small businesses, and regional communities already under strain. Umbrellus is beginning to translate these challenges into tangible responses. Early prototypes and upcoming pilots are modest steps, but they carry a larger belief: that niche, focused ventures have a vital role in shaping resilience. We may not be able to return to how things were, but we can help shape the path forward.
