Updates

  • This morning, YFS’ CEO Christopher John joined QCOSS to launch their 2025 Living Affordability Report, which shows that low-income households in Queensland, especially families, are facing impossible choices between paying the rent, buying groceries, and affording medication or other health care. The report showed that 4 out of 5 families on low incomes are unable to afford a basic standard of living, with rent being the biggest financial stress. In Logan, the median rent has increased by over 68% in the past 5 years. 38% of Logan residents are in the most financially disadvantaged group of Australians, and 71% of clients who come to YFS are facing financial difficulties. When families are forced to choose between food, rent and health care, it’s not just their budgets that suffer – it's their health, their wellbeing, and their children’s futures. YFS supports QCOSS’ call for both the state and federal governments to do more to support households on low incomes. This includes measures to improve access to affordable housing and targeted energy bill relief, as well as increasing income support above the poverty line. • This morning, YFS joined community clubs, services, and local businesses across Beaudesert, the Scenic Rim and Jimboomba to march against domestic and family violence.     We demanded change, because every person in our community deserves to be safe and live a life free of violence and abuse.     ➡️Because everyone deserves equal and respectful relationships.     ➡️ Because everyone deserves a safe home, not one brimming with fear.     ➡️ Because everyone deserves a childhood without coercive control, isolation, or threats.     ➡️ Because our children deserve role models who speak up and call out sexism, gendered stereotyping, and misogyny in all its forms.     ➡️ Because our friends, neighbours, and other loved ones are suffering, and together we say: Not In My Community.     Every voice matters and we invite you to join us. Together, we will build a future where domestic and family violence is not tolerated.  You can learn more and sign up for regular updates about the Not In My Community movement here:  https://lnkd.in/ge4t3JBD

  • 🎉Congratulations to Brisbane Zero for receiving QCOSS' Community Impact Award last night. It is a wonderful recognition of your commitment towards ending homelessness in Brisbane and Logan Zero looks forward to continuing to partner with you in this vital work. Throughout 2025, we have been thrilled to see the Advance to Zero movement, an initiative of the Australian Alliance to End Homelessness, expand to new regions in Queensland, and look forward to more communities benefitting from this coordinated, collaborative and person-centred approach. Through system improvements, the ‘functional zero’ approach aims to have more people exiting from homelessness than entering at any one time and to ensure that incidents of homelessness, when they do occur, are rare, brief, and non-recurring.

Thanks to QCOSS for this Community Impact Award. It’s a meaningful reminder of the power of collaboration across community and homelessness services, working with shared data, shared responsibility, and a shared commitment to solve homelessness in Brisbane. A big thank you to our Brisbane Zero partners and collaborators, and especially to the frontline workers who, in the middle of a housing crisis, continue doing their very best to support the most vulnerable people in our community ✨ 3rd Space, Bric Housing, Common Ground Queensland, Brisbane Youth Service, Communify, Churches of Christ in Queensland, Institute for Urban Indigenous Health, Kyabra Community Association, Micah Projects, Mission Australia, Murri Watch Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation, RFQ - Richmond Fellowship Queensland, Teen Challenge Queensland, UnitingCare Queensland, The Salvation Army Australia, Youth Housing Project, Youth Advocacy Centre (YAC)

  • A huge congratulations to Queensland's oldest charity on 140 years of action, supporting young women and their children to live safe lives - free from violence. It's incredibly encouraging to know that as long as homelessness is still affecting the lives of Queensland women and children, you will be standing up for those needing safety, hope, and opportunity. Your work towards ending homelessness is inspirational and we are thankful to partner with you. The Lady Musgrave Trust #TheLadyMusgraveTrust #womenshomelessness

  • We were thrilled to learn that Griffith University’s evaluation of YFS’ Resolve program (which concluded in 2024) has been published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Criminology. Resolve worked with young people aged 10 to 16 years who were at risk of entering the youth justice system and provided strength-based, trauma-informed case management through a coaching approach which was co-designed with the young people being supported. The evaluation, which covered the period from June 2022 to April 2024, demonstrated a: ➡️ 66% reduction in offending behaviours  ➡️ 78% improvement in life skills  ➡️ 87% improvement in wellbeing  ➡️ 96% increase in hope among participants An extract from the article is below: In the staff interviews, the Resolve coaches expressed their commitment to the practice framework guiding the programme and described how they implemented it in their day-to-day work with young people. Relational, youth-centred ways of engaging were at the heart of the coaches’ practice, and they provided insights into why this approach may be particularly successful with at-risk youth in early-intervention efforts. 'Young people come into the programme and are very guarded. Often, they are not coming from a good space and they lack foundational relationship skills. They are not wired to trust others. We are teaching them about relationships and how their brains can be geared towards relationships and not just survival and how different that feels for them.' (Resolve coach) [Casley, M., Bateson, M., Harris, P., Brookes, D., Allen, V., & McDonald, K. (2025). “Going the extra mile”: A mixed-methods evaluation of an early-intervention youth coaching and diversion programme. Journal of Criminology, 0(0)]. Check out the whole article here: https://lnkd.in/gb67gGzE YFS strongly advocates for a shift away from punitive youth justice reforms towards toward evidence-based, community-led approaches like Resolve that prioritise rehabilitation, early intervention, and culturally safe support.

Yesterday, we joined YFS Legal to celebrate the opening of their new office in Beenleigh. The event included a heartfelt Welcome to Country by Aunty Robyn and a beautiful smoking ceremony led by Lucy Davis. We also heard thoughtful words from Rowan Holzberger MP, local Member for Forde, along with YFS CEO Christopher John and YFS Legal Principal Solicitor Candice Hughes, about the importance of accessible, free legal support for people in our community. It was a warm day in every sense - sunny skies and great company! Thank you to everyone who joined us to mark this special milestone for YFS Legal.
