Forest cover share across UNECE countries in 2025 shows striking contrasts: - 74% in Finland - 1% in Kazakhstan These differences reflect geography, climate, land use, and historical management. 🌲 Countries with high forest cover, like Finland and Sweden, are shaped by boreal ecosystems and strong forestry sectors. 🏜️ Countries with minimal forest area, such as Central Asia, face arid conditions and competing land uses. ♻️ These gaps matter for carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and wood resources, and are key for designing tailored forest policies. 📘 Explore more in the 2025 Forest Profile for Europe, North America, the Caucasus & Central Asia 📖 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dGTtqcqs 📊 Data accessible here: https://lnkd.in/dWJWUsDX #UNECE #forests #publication #Forest2025 #Climate #boreal Paola DEDA Roman Michalak Liliana Annovazzi-Jakab Daniel Griswold

The United Nations vision is of a world in which all types of forests and trees outside forests are sustainably managed, contribute to sustainable development and provide economic, social, environmental and cultural benefits for present and future generations (UNFF, Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030). The joint UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section supports developing evidence-based policies for sustainable forest management and communicates about the many products and ecosystem services provided to society while assisting countries of the region to monitor and manage forests.

Yesterday's Forbes article shows how incorporating more trees into our cities can play a powerful role in creating circular material cycles, strenghtening ecological resilience, and even providing cultural continuity — reminding us that nature is essential to futureproofing our communities. It also highlights our Trees in Cities Challenge, a global effort encouraging cities to commit to ambitious tree-planting and long-term urban forest stewardship — an example of turning vision into real action. Is pistachio green gold? 🌱 Could this humble nut boost livelihoods and restore forest cover? These questions were at the heart of discussions during a national workshop on non-wood forest product value chains, held over the past two days. The workshop, organized by UNECE and FAO in collaboration with the Forestry Agency under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, explored the significant potential of pistachio and other non-wood forest products. Participants provided valuable input for the development of a national roadmap aimed at unlocking this potential—supporting sustainable forest management, economic opportunities, and rural resilience. Gold or not, it could be the key to greener future. 🌍✨ #Forests #Sustainability #Tajikistan #NWFP Iffet Deniz Cengiz Makhsudsho Nematov Daniel Griswold

🌍Boreal and Temperate Forests: The Earth’s second lung – #COP30🌍 Today, 14 November, we mark Boreal and Temperate Forests Day at #COP30 in Belém, Brazil – a key moment to spotlight these forests as nature’s powerful climate ally. UNECE is proud to present two publications, with topics that are central to today’s discussions at COP30: 📘 2025 Forest Profile for Europe, North America, Caucasus and Central Asia – a comprehensive overview of forest trends, health, and their role in climate mitigation and resilience across 56 countries of the UNECE region. https://lnkd.in/dg-QptsF 🌲 Boreal Forests: A Global Treasure – showing why boreal forests, which store 32% of global terrestrial carbon, are critical for achieving the #ParisAgreement goals. https://lnkd.in/dVS5Jaeh Forests in the UNECE region cover 42.5% of the world’s forest area. They are vital for biodiversity, climate regulation, wood supply, and human well-being, globally. While they continue to grow, they face mounting threats from wildfires, pests, and other climate-driven stresses that can erode their key contributions. #Boreal and #temperate forests have a central role in climate action, and these reports call for bold policy shifts. #COP30 in Belém is an opportunity to place boreal and temperate forests, together with the tropical ones, at the heart of global climate strategies. #COP30 #ForestPavilion #Forests #ClimateAction #BorealForests #TemperateForests #UNECE #UNFF Paola DEDA Liliana Annovazzi-Jakab Dominique Reeb Kathy Abusow Roberta Boscolo Roman Michalak Daniel Griswold (photo credits: Adobe Stock)

Our new 2025 Forest Profile for Europe, North America, the Caucasus and Central Asia is making headlines worldwide. Following yesterday’s launch and press conference in Geneva, major international media have reported on its urgent findings, including France24, which featured the story: 📰 UN says forests should form key plank of COP30 – France24: https://lnkd.in/eR3NYy8U The 2025 Forest Profile warns that while forests across the northern hemisphere have expanded over recent decades, these gains are now jeopardized by record wildfires, pests, and an escalating climate-driven crisis. As the world prepares for COP30 Brazil, the message from #UNECE is clear: Forest resilience must be at the heart of global #climateaction. 🌐 Join us today at 14:00 CET for the online launch event to explore the findings and discuss solutions for safeguarding the world’s #forests. 📄 Event programme: https://lnkd.in/dZCVW6cU 🔗 Click here to join the event: https://lnkd.in/epu4dvg5 📘 Read the full 2025 Forest Profile report: https://lnkd.in/ey_Kkbu2 United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, Paola DEDA, Liliana Annovazzi-Jakab, Federal Office for the Environment FOEN, Dominique Reeb, Roberta Boscolo, Kathy Abusow, Roman Michalak, Shuyue Li 李纾悦, Sustainable Forestry Initiative, World Meteorological Organization, Bundesministerium für Land- und Forstwirtschaft, Regionen und Wasserwirtschaft

New UN report warns: Northern hemisphere forests face rising threats despite decades of growth. The 2025 Forest Profile for Europe, North America, the Caucasus and Central Asia, released by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, paints a stark picture: decades of progress in forest expansion and #sustainability are being undermined by #climate-driven crises. Over the past 30 years, #forest area in the region has increased by 60 million hectares, yet this success is now under threat from record #wildfires, #droughts, and pest outbreaks. Covering 1.76 billion hectares, these forests represent 42% of the world’s total and are essential to global #carbon storage and #biodiversity. The report warns that, without urgent policy action, forests could shift from a carbon sink to a carbon source, undermining global #climategoals. With COP30 Brazil approaching, the findings underline the need to place #forests at the heart of #climateaction. Explore the report: https://lnkd.in/ey_Kkbu2
