O p e n i n g The Swiss Radio and Television (RTS) on the EPFL Campus in Lausanne has officially opened! The project, designed by OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, features four cores ('emergences') that support a suspended level ('the Champ') approximately 8 m above ground. The emergences contain a television studio, radio studio, media library/café, and administration offices, while the Champ provides office spaces and meeting rooms. Below, two underground levels house technical spaces, and one level is reserved for parking. The four emergences consist of reinforced concrete walls placed around their periphery, at vertical circulation zones, and around the studios. Their positions and orientations were optimised using a genetic algorithm to minimise structural deformation and steel use. The Champ’s structure is formed by 10 main trusses supported by the emergences’ concrete walls. Their irregular orientation was also optimised algorithmically. Secondary Warren beams, spaced 7.5 m and aligned with the sheds, support a metallic frame and composite slab (collaborating steel panel), which suspends the floor from these beams. #campus #rts #EPFL #completed #structural #engineering

O p e n i n g The new Marktraum (Marketplace) at Vienna’s Naschmarkt officially opened last week, adding a contemporary public building to one of the city’s most visited urban spaces. Located above the historic Wienfluss vault, the marketplace is defined by a hybrid timber-steel-concrete structural system. A partial reinforced-concrete basement, slender steel columns, and a wide-spanning timber roof form the backbone of the hall. The roof structure, built from glulam beams and cross-laminated timber panels, supports an extensive green roof build-up, including planting and soil. Designed as a publicly accessible, non-consumable surface, it introduces new value to the surrounding urban fabric. A clear structural grid with spans up to 9.5 metres allows natural light deep into the interior and supports flexible layouts for market stands, circulation, and future use. A w a r d The LIT Lighting Design Awards honoured the project Mon Nuage - High garden in the “Exterior Architectural Illumination” category. We congratulate CONCEPTO on this recognition of their innovative and environmentally considerate lighting design, which transforms the building’s identity after dark. Located in Rueil-Malmaison, France, this multi-level building accommodates technical spaces, a restaurant, and an accessible rooftop terrace. Wrapped in a distinctive ‘cloud’ of 3,240 stainless steel tubes, the façade establishes a unique visual identity, enhanced by dynamic lighting effects and a fog system that we have developed in close collaboration with Hamonic + Masson & Associes. A w a r d e d The Marie Paradis sports complex project has won the Trophée Eiffel 2025 in the category 'Réhabilitation'. Designed by bureau faceB, the sports complex is the result of successive additions over time. The two sports halls, unified under one volume and visible from Chemin de Parenty, interact fluidly, with staggered levels offering views over the gymnastics hall. The #renovation builds on these strengths, treating the existing building as a resource of #reusable architectural elements and materials. The aim was to clarify circulation and give the complex a renewed identity. The existing gymnasium is supported by four 7-meter steel truss frames, with purlins spaced 2 meters apart, which support the roof. Its main façade combines full-height masonry and curtain walls, braced by vertical I-sections. The west gable rests on concrete pilasters, and the gables and masonry corners provide overall stability. The extension follows the same construction principles: four steel frames, a roof supported on 2 m purlins, façade and roof bracing to ensure stability, and a façade supported by posts. #SteelIn2025

B + G A c a d e m y The B+G Academy Volume 2 opened two weeks ago in Brussels. The program brought together a diverse cohort of participants and instructors from several B+G offices and disciplines. This edition placed particular emphasis on tacit knowledge. Round-tables, debates and in-depth discussions created a setting in which our most experienced colleagues could share insights that rarely appear in manuals or textbooks. The program also featured a keynote lecture on double-skin façades by the renowned Andrea Compagno. Structured lectures covered themes ranging from Façade Typologies to Project Organisation, and these sessions complemented the more informal exchanges, yielding a genuinely wide-ranging learning environment. #façade #academy #brussels

A w a r d e d We are proud to announce that the Expo Cultural Park Greenhouse Garden in Shanghai has been awarded Winner – 2025 Structural Awards by the The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE). Designed by Delugan Meissl Associated Architects (DMAA), the project integrates an existing industrial steel hall with a lightweight aluminium cable-net pavilion. Our team delivered both the structural and façade engineering, applying innovative design strategies to maximise natural light through slender frameworks and circular roof openings. G r o u n d b r e a k i n g C e r e m o n y Recently, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Friedensschule at Rolandsmauer in Osnabrück marked the official start of its construction. Designed by the Berlin-based firm #LankesKöngeter in partnership with Birke Zimmermann Landschaftsarchitekten, the new building is being constructed to Passivhaus standards and will include approximately 13,200 m² of gross floor area. Once finished, it will offer modern learning and communal spaces for a four-form secondary school, fostering a contemporary and sustainable learning environment. F i r s t P r i z e We congratulate Snøhetta on winning the international competition for the new home of the Neue Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf. Located on a triangular block bordered by three major streets, the project will house approximately 38,000 square metres of cultural and educational facilities, including the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the City of Düsseldorf's Music Library, and the Clara Schumann Music School. We had the privilege to support this outstanding architectural vision through our structural and façade engineering. The design features three interconnected building segments that exhibit a clear structural logic, enabling efficient load distribution and forming a network of accessible public spaces. This layout improves visual and physical links within the city while providing a cohesive architectural and technical framework for complex performance, rehearsal, and support areas. A r t i c l e Our colleagues Alexander Freund, Osama Naji, Daniel Pfanner, and Ljuba Tascheva wrote an insightful article titled ‘Digitales Planen und Bauen im Kontext der Gebäudehülle’ (Digital Planning of a Building Envelope) in the Sonderheft ‘Glasbau & Fassade’ (Volume 94 Issue S2, October 2025 Ernst & Sohn) about the façade planning of the Elbtower in Hamburg that we were responsible for. The article examines the planning process from a façade design perspective, focusing on technical solutions that balance architectural requirements and geometric complexity.
