How can Europe unite to build the next generation of resilient, competitive cities? 🇪🇺 In a workshop last week, we explored what it will take for Europe to rise to its next major challenge: creating thriving, future-proof urban environments in a rapidly changing geopolitical and economic landscape. So how can Europe cultivate this sense of hope? We think it starts within cities! Inspired by President Ursula von der Leyen’s call that “Europe must rediscover this spirit... of boldness, action and renewal,” we are expanding our collaborations across Europe, with Germany as our first strategic step. The purpose is to be a hub where innovation, knowledge, and collaboration meet to strengthen urban resilience and competitiveness. Andreas Wenzel, CEO of German-Danish Chamber of Commerce shared that Germany is entering a decisive moment. After years of stagnation, a new government, and a €500 billion investment package, the country is preparing for large-scale transformation. German stakeholders are actively seeking solutions in climate adaptation, affordable housing, and digitization, and they see the Nordic approach as uniquely valuable with its characteristics of being trust-based, flexible, human-centered, and willing to experiment. Ditte Lysgaard Vind and Jesse Shapins presented on The Copenhagen Way publication, sharing about Copenhagen’s own 30-year transformation, showing what is possible when long-term governance, public-private collaboration, and cultural vision come together. Kirsten Jung, CEO and Founder of SCHULBAU enlightened us with her deep expertise on the German school construction market and offered valuable insights. In short, we discussed how the opportunity for impact across Germany is significant, but success requires: 1️⃣ Deep local partnerships - need local collaborators for project execution phases 2️⃣ Cultural understanding - language barriers beyond initial meetings as high German proficiency needed for technical discussions 3️⃣ Patience with process - bureaucratic procedures are time-intensive and often done on paper Overall, Europe needs more transparent dialogues, cross-sector co-creation, and a human-centric approach when city making and BLOXHUB is here to help serve as the bridge builder to experts and local partners. As we further build a European network, specifically starting with Germany, we are grateful for our partners Andreas Wenzel and Gesche Lohmann from German-Danish Chamber of Commerce, Henning Larsen, Copenhagen Capacity and Joerg Knieling from HafenCity Universität Hamburg (HCU) with whom we build strong collaborations across projects. Thank you for all the participants who added into the discussion and for our facilitators, Ditte Deigaard, Martine Reinhold Kildeby and Christoffer Worm Nielsen. If you are interested to explore a German or European collaboration, reach out to our Director of Global Partnerships, Martine Reinhold Kildeby. #GermanMarket #EuropeanNetwork

🙌 New Partnership Alert 🙌 We're excited to team up with UNLEASH in 2026! BLOXHUB + UNLEASH + 200 young change-makers engaging with industry to take on Europe's most pressing urban challenges!
Halfway to 2030, UNLEASH is coming back to where it all started. From June 27 to July 4, 2026, UNLEASH Europe will bring together 200 young changemakers from across the continent to Copenhagen for a week of co-creation, learning, and collaboration. Across Europe, the built environment lies at the heart of a just green transition, shaping how we live, move, and connect. Yet achieving the continent’s targets requires rethinking the way we build our homes, infrastructures, and shared spaces, and ensuring our cities are not only resilient, but allow their communities to truly thrive. In partnership with BLOXHUB, the Nordic hub for sustainable urbanization, UNLEASH Europe will explore how circular, inclusive, and resilient solutions can transform Europe’s cities and communities. Participants will work in cross-sector teams on themes such as equitable access to housing and infrastructure, circularity in construction, and resilience in rapidly changing environments. The program is possible thanks to the funding and technical support of Rambøll Fonden / Ramboll Foundation and Ramboll, Realdania, and Nordic Council of Ministers. 💡 Applications open in early 2026. 🔗 Read the full announcement on the link in comments.

"Imagination is something that we need to constantly nurture, especially in this time, and it's good to do that together." - Anne Mette Boye, Aarhus Chief City Architect Last week, 12 European City Architects from 8 countries came together to explore four key questions shaping their cities and to exchange inspiration on emerging solutions. Chief City Architect, Lars Jensen, from Københavns Kommune hosted a full-day journey across Copenhagen, sharing the city’s architectural vision, visiting key development sites, and opening our session with an introduction to the new Architecture Plan being developed for 2026. The conversations connected closely to Copenhagen’s ambitions as well as broader European architectural and urban planning priorities, highlighting shared challenges and the solutions being tested across cities. The group of architects then joined us at BLOXHUB for a collaborative working session focused on the challenges and opportunities ahead, brought together with a mix of perspectives, experiences, and city contexts. Every strong brainstorm needs a spark of inspiration. We kicked off the workshop with sharp presentations from Cobe, Gehl - Making Cities for People, and Home.Earth. Thank you Io Maria Schønherr, Mads Birgens, Ida Bigum, and Philip Højberg Unger for setting the stage for exploring how cities can advance identity, livability, and affordability in a rapidly changing urban landscape. Thank you to Kristine Munkgård Pedersen and Monica Magnussen for your collaboration on this important European city agenda, and to Ditte Deigaard, Jakob Norman-Hansen, Ditte Lysgaard Vind, Christoffer Worm Nielsen and Sofie Lynge Jespersen for facilitating the discussions and capturing underlying themes. And a warm thank you to all the participating European City Architects for contributing to an evening filled with energy, engagement, and meaningful dialogue: Anne Mette Boye (Aarhus), Petra Marko (Bratislava), Piotr Lorens (Gdańsk), Lars Jensen (Copenhagen), Peteris Ratas, AIA, LEED AP (Riga), Henrik Lundberg (Stavanger), Torleif Falk (Stockholm), Susanne Grunkin (Odense), Peter Murray OBE (London), Laura Kairieneė (Vilnius), Aneta Wardzińska-Siczek (Warsaw). A question for all of us to reflect on: How can we continue to inspire one another with solutions and ideas to our shared urban challenges? #CityArchitects #UrbanInnovation #FutureCities

How Can Cities Deliver on the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Goals? 🌱🌍 Last week, we brought together stakeholders from the private and public sectors, academia, industry associations, and NGOs for a dialogue on how we can collaborate to shape the future of urban nature. The discussion highlighted cross-sector collaboration and a broader societal approach as essential to overcoming systemic and practical barriers and to realising the full value of urban nature. Key points included establishing a shared language for urban nature and biodiversity, aligning on a common vision, and developing an action plan anchored in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Insights were provided by Rasmus Vincentz from Habitats ApS, who clarified Denmark’s obligations under the Kunming-Montreal framework, particularly Target 12, and the role of city-level instruments such as the Berlin Urban Nature Pact in moving commitments into practice, and by Anna Esbjørn from CONCITO, who shared insights from the newly published inspiration report on climate and urban nature, including strong municipal examples with potential to scale across contexts. The conversation and the work continue. To learn more or get involved, contact our Urban Partnerships Program Manager, Ditte Deigaard. In the U.S., 43% of more than 24,000 cities are shrinking, often due to socioeconomic and infrastructure challenges (Nature Cities Journal). This trend is not unique to the U.S. as cities around the world are facing similar issues, highlighting the urgent need for new solutions and ideas for urban revitalization. Our Director of Global Networks & Partnerships, Martine Reinhold Kildeby, is in the U.S. digging into this exact topic at Urban Land Institute's Fall Meeting. Over the last years, Martine has been collaborating with U.S. cities and learning from revitalization projects to address the critical question: How do we revive dying urban areas? Here are 3 key takeaways for cities to take action now: 1️⃣ Collaboration creates capacity – change happens when more actors move in the same direction. This is motivated by shared risk, responsibility and a motivating vision. 2️⃣ Integration creates resiliency – connecting solutions turns isolated projects into long-term urban strategies. This creates coherence and efficiency. 3️⃣ Experimentation creates progress - learning in motion keeps development agile and adaptive to city life. Progress through prototypes – not perfection. What examples have you seen of cities successfully bringing new life to declining urban areas? #UrbanRevitalization #UrbanDevelopment #FutureOfCities #CityLeadership
