In a country where conflict has strained every part of the health system, innovation is proving essential. From stabilizing medicine supply chains and powering health facilities with solar energy, to mobile primary health care units and digital tracking of medical stock, practical and scalable solutions are helping keep healthcare services running across #Sudan, even in the most difficult conditions. When women are excluded from local decisions-making, communities lose leadership, insight, and the perspectives needed for resilient recovery. UNDP supports women’s meaningful participation in community management committees, recovery planning and community governance, ensuring women help shape the priorities and solutions that affect their daily lives. #16Days

In #Khartoum, UNDP Resident Representative Luca Renda met workers leading their own recovery through cash-for-work activities. Community members are clearing debris, reopening access routes, and earning the income their families depend on. These efforts are not only restoring vital pathways, they are restoring dignity, initiative, and a shared sense of recovery. Every cleared street is a reminder that even in the hardest moments, Sudanese communities continue to rebuild from the ground up. This initiative is made possible through our #FundingWindows, with generous support from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Korea, and implemented on the ground by Human Appeal.

Readiness and mobility can be lifesaving during crisis. In Sudan’s ongoing war, UNDP’s mobile health facilities, implemented with IOM - UN Migration Sudan and Federal Ministry Of Health - Sudan. وزارة الصحة الإتحادية - السودان, bring essential healthcare directly to families fleeing violence. Fully equipped and ready to deploy, these mobile primary healthcare units ensure that care reaches people where they are, not the other way around. Since November 5th, the Al-Afad unit has provided over 2,000 medical support to displaced people arriving from #ElFasher, thanks to the vital support of The Global Fund.

In Andalla, Kassala State, families who once struggled with severe water shortages are finally seeing lasting change. The rehabilitation of the local water yard, including an expanded well, restored filtration system, upgraded elevated tanks, and new solar-powered pumps is giving the community a steady, reliable source of drinking water for the first time in years. This progress is part of a wider project funded by KSrelief and implemented by UNDP across Kassala and Gedaref States. Through this support, 10 new water yards are being constructed and 44 existing sites are being rehabilitated, with 56 new pumps installed to expand access to safe water. The project also provides essential WASH materials, trains Water Users Associations to manage facilities sustainably, and strengthens waste management systems by supplying 2 new garbage trucks and repairing 6 others. Altogether, these efforts are helping deliver safer, more reliable water for more than 3 million people, easing daily burdens on families, improving community health, and strengthening resilience at a time when basic services are more critical than ever.

🌍 Stay Tuned! This week UNDP is launching its new Beyond Crisis global newsletter that brings together stories of how development starts in the midst of crisis, not after it. Across Sudan and around the world, UNDP supports communities as they restore services, rebuild livelihoods, and create stability day by day, even under the toughest conditions. The newsletter will act as a space where our experiences add to global insight and where others’ resilience fuels our own. Follow UNDP Crisis Action to catch the first edition as it drops.
🚀 Exciting news! 🎉 We will be launching Beyond Crisis, UNDP’s newsletter exploring how development on day one transforms lives and accelerates progress. 🌍 Around the world, our teams work alongside communities living through crisis — in Ukraine’s mined farmlands, in Yemen’s drought-stricken villages, in towns recovering from conflict in Nigeria and Syria, in villages shattered by disaster, from earthquakes Afghanistan and Myanmar to the recent hurricane in Jamaica. And again and again, one truth was unmistakable: 💡 People aren’t waiting for crises to end. They’re rebuilding from day one and investing in resilience to break cycles of conflict and deprivation: from conflict and disasters towards peace 🕊️ and prosperity. ✨ Their determination, their ingenuity, their leadership — this is what inspired us to create the Beyond Crisis series. 💬 We wanted a space where these stories could breathe. A place that goes beyond headlines and into the lived experience of people and communities navigating some of the world’s most complex challenges. 🤝 We believe that investing in development during crisis is not optional – it is transformative. It reduces need, accelerates recovery and builds peace - safeguarding our shared future. 📰 After a multi-month collaboration across 45 UNDP Country Offices, we launch the first edition. It features a powerful story of communities in Ukraine 🇺🇦 turning minefields back into cornfields with the support of UNDP Ukraine.
