Updates

  • BVN Architecture and Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, in collaboration with RSP Architects, have won the international design competition for United World College of South East Asia’s (UWC South East Asia) new 5-hectare Dover campus in Tengah, Singapore. Developed by our Sydney studio in partnership with a talented multidisciplinary team, the proposal responds to an ambitious and complex brief. Driven by UWC South East Asia’s values and mission “to make education a force to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future,” the new campus authentically embodies unity, sustainability and well-being and is envisioned as a living, breathing community.   The masterplan, organised around a central green spine, comprises a primary school set within the forest, alongside a centrally located middle school and a high school. Shared learning labs, sports facilities and a boarding house complete the campus, while an auditorium and arts centre act as a beacon visible from the adjacent Tengah Park. These elements have been designed to promote experiential learning, a sense of belonging and deep connections with nature. Andrew O'Donnell, Director at AHMM, said: “It has been extraordinary to see just how fully the College enacts its mission in every aspect of teaching, community building and the day-to-day operation of the school. This really served to inspire us during the competition and it is now wonderful to be working directly with the College to realise the shared vision we have created with them for the new campus.”

Last week, we hosted Building for Reuse, a conversation between Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and Elliott Wood on how reuse is reshaping the way we design and deliver projects. Using One Portwall Square – Society Building’s new Bristol home – as the starting point, cormac farrelly and Gary Elliott explored how attitudes to reuse have evolved, why imagination is essential to unlocking the potential of existing structures, and how designers can push the boundaries of what is possible. It was exactly the kind of open, curious debate we hoped to spark, and a strong foundation for future events at Society Building Bristol. Interested in joining us at a future event? Get in touch.

  • Planning approval has been granted by Birmingham City Council for Phoenix Yard Digbeth - the regeneration of a former ironworks situated at the gateway to one of Birmingham’s most culturally significant districts. Designed by AHMM for Hartwell Plc, the mixed-use masterplan draws on Digbeth’s rich character to create a carefully designed neighbourhood that will drive the regeneration of the area as a thriving creative quarter. Comprising of four new buildings and one retained listed building, the 1.13-hectare site will deliver 260,000 sq ft of new creative, media and education space, commercial floor space with a roof terrace offering views across the city, 240 new homes and retail, along with an enhanced public realm. • Last week, we celebrated Kentish Town Health Centre (KTHC) receiving an Architecture Today Award! The AT Awards celebrate projects where the partnership between client and architect has delivered long-lasting value, environmental responsibility, and meaningful community impact. Commissioned through the NHS’ Local Improvement Finance Trust initiative and completed in 2008, KTHC has brought together previously separate services under one welcoming roof. The centre integrates healthcare, community, and art to create an environment that enhances communication, improves patient experience, and fosters wellbeing through openness and connectivity. At the ceremony, Executive Director Susi Le Good was joined by our client, Doctor Roy Macgregor, and David Ransley, who led the development of the centre and championed the creation of adaptable, collaborative, and efficient healthcare spaces. Winning this award is an acknowledgement of KTHC’s enduring relevance as a building that continues to evolve with the community it serves while staying true to its warm, non-institutional character. Judges commented: “An early example of the unique blend of clarity and sophistication that fuelled AHMM’s phenomenal success, Kentish Town Health Centre is attracting renewed interest from politicians as a model for devolved health provision. On its completion, it was clear that this was something special. Over the years it has gone from strength to strength.” Congratulations to all winners across the categories! • Angel Square, the retention and redevelopment of a postmodern office building located directly above Angel Station for Tishman Speyer UK, reached practical completion last week – an important milestone made possible through the collaborative spirit of the entire client, design and construction team. Retaining 80% of the existing building’s reinforced concrete frame, basement and foundation, and targeting BREEAM Outstanding, the reimagined, all-electric development for offers a diverse mix of spaces, including 7 floors of office floorspace, a communal roof terrace, a new corner café and affordable workspace for local enterprises – all to cater to organisations of varying scales. As well as fostering collaboration internally, new active frontages, public realm enhancements, and a reinstated public house celebrate this prominent corner site in the heart of Islington. The new façade utilises a profiled GRC frame, taking its rhythm from the retained existing structure and is accented with opening windows, profiled spandrels and glazed terracotta. • Yesterday, after four years on site, we attended the opening of Broadgate Central - London’s newest retail destination. Delivered as part of our work at 1-2 Broadgate, the 50,000 sq ft retail, leisure, and amenity arcade houses 28 new brands across two levels, complementing and providing direct access from Liverpool Street Station to the 500,000 sq ft of office space that rises above. The ribbon cutting marked a huge milestone for the entire design team and a moment of celebration with a fantastic client and talented group of consultants who have worked extremely hard to deliver an ambitious vision for the Broadgate campus. • As part of our ongoing support for architectural learning initiatives, the practice recently hosted ten young people participating in the RIBA’s national work experience programme and the The Academy of Real Assets, both of which offer students valuable professional experience in the built environment sector. Hosted by AHMM’s team of education mentors at our Morelands office, the group of learners explored the brief of ‘The Memory House’ and were tasked with designing a house based on their existing experiences of space using mixed media such as drawing, model making, digital design and collaging. The programme also included a site visit to 1 Broadgate – the recently completed mixed-use development, comprised of 50,000 square feet of retail space and 500,000 square feet of new workspace - to demonstrate how architectural ideas are translated into physical form. • At this week's Building Magazine Awards ceremony, we celebrated 76 Southbank being named Retrofit Project of the Year, with judges commenting that the project demonstrates “an elegant and elemental retrofit of a notable building that preserves and enhances its character, whilst transforming it for modern use." Delivered with Stanhope PLC alongside a talented team of consultants, interventions have preserved this important building, originally designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, carefully refurbishing, extending and enhancing it to deliver new flexible workspace. Judges added that the project demonstrates "impressive sustainability credentials, with 80% of the structural frame reused alongside innovative construction methods.” The building is a leading example of purposeful, low carbon design, achieving both BREEAM Outstanding and 5-star certification under the NABERS Design for Performance standard.
