This is a story of beautiful, impactful, super well worth it scope creep. It started with a simple question from Ayers Saint Gross's own Amina Mohamed - "Aley, I've noticed our firm's Sustainability Action Plan is behind how the American Society of Landscape Architects is talking about carbon in landscape architecture. Can we do something about that this year?" Yes, yes we can. While we're at it, Courtney Wolff, Shannon Dowling, AIA, and Jessica Leonard, when we split Landscape Architecture off to have its own metrics, we're going to have to rethink how we're measuring sustainability in Planning & Strategy. Also, 2025 was the first year for #MaterialsPledge reporting. Hey, Michelle L. Kollmann and Linnea Kessler-Gowell, can we talk about how to better integrate the materials pledge into the firm's sustainability action plan? We should probably update this to our new brand standard, include our brand spanking new #Just3.0 label, and update the Practice section to capture the firm's first ever carbon offsets while we're at it… Margaret Zivkovich - can you help me with that? Ayers Saint Gross made our first Just Disclosure with the Living Future Institute in 2019 to share quantitative data about the ways we practice social equity, inclusion, and belonging in our operations and how we practice design. We believe design should solve problems for everyone, and we hope that the transparency of our #JustLabel encourages others to think critically about equity in design and the built environment. Every two years we reevaluate and renew our Just Disclosure to track the operational, social, and financial efforts we have made to better serve our employees, clients, and communities. The Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center at the Missouri Botanical Garden received the prestigious Best of Show Award at the 2025 SEGD Global Design Awards, which recognize the most innovative experiential design projects around the world. As the top award winner of the year, the visitor center is recognized for its thoughtful biophilic design elements inspired by the history of the Garden and its extensive plant collection. The design features a custom scrim that filters dappled light into the lobby to evoke the feeling of entering a clearing in the woods, custom terrazzo flooring that reflects the local landscape with inlays of river rock and hand-laid brass leaves, and furniture inspired by natural forms like rocks and pebbles. SEGD award jurors praised the project and said: “Both epic and restrained at the same time, the care, love, and warmth of this project came through to the whole jury. It takes passion and commitment to make a simple set of ideas come to fruition on a stage this large.” Thank you to SEGD for this amazing recognition! Taylor Visitor Center has been honored with both an Honor Award for Placemaking and the Best of Show Award at the 2025 SEGD Global Design Awards! SEGD’s highest accolade, the prestigious Best of Show award recognizes one project that exemplifies the very best in experiential design, innovation, and impact. “The Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center was designed to inspire visitors to learn about and take wonder in the natural environment. The University of Utah is undergoing a significant transformation, shifting its historically commuter-centric campus into a dynamic residential community. Opening in 2026, a 1,400-bed residential community will enrich the residential experience for all students, providing modern housing options, diverse dining choices, and an array of amenities. This project has been honored with a Partnerships Bulletin 2025 P3 Award for Best Education and Higher Education Project. Ayers Saint Gross transformed Coppin State University's Physical Education Complex into a vibrant branded environment that inspires community and campus pride. A double-height statement wall at the building’s entrance features the lyrics of Coppin’s alma mater in the university’s signature blue. Principal Lindsay Story was recently interviewed by Baltimore Fishbowl about this "low cost, high impact project" that connects students with their campus in a new way.
