NEW BLOG: Climate & health goals clash in California’s “Lithium Valley” Southern California’s Imperial County is home to enough lithium to source 375 million electric vehicle batteries. Extraction of this resource is thus key to meeting the climate goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels — but it may also put the health of the local community at risk. Camille Sytko, CHE’s Science Communications Intern, explains the legal challenges, state protections, and what comes next in tackling this lawsuit. 🌱To read the full blog, visit https://lnkd.in/eyD5JCRx

For #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth, we are celebrating three individuals who are dedicated to protecting the health and safety of their communities and the environment. From leading Indigenous movements to speaking out about the harmful impacts of chemical exposure and mining among Indigenous communities, Tom B.K. Goldtooth, Fern Holland, and Jasmine Monroe strive to educate decision-makers and the broader public about the rights of Indigenous peoples, and work to protect the health and well-being of their communities and future generations. “As Indigenous Peoples, we have an understanding of our responsibilities and our role. We understand how we are here as the guardians and caretakers of the soil, land, nature, and life itself. So we want the world to have a better understanding of how to address climate change and some of the ecological challenges that this planet is now having.” Visit https://lnkd.in/etrxsMvY to view the full post.
