Join us in honoring and celebrating an Edward Hospital Emergency Department icon as he steps into retirement. On November 17, 2025, Randall Schmidt worked his final shift and retired on his 50th anniversary. Randall began his career as an orderly in an 8-bed ED staffed by just four people. Over the decades, he witnessed Edward Hospital evolve through multiple expansions into the modern emergency department it is today. He has worn many hats—from orderly to interim manager—but his heart has always remained with direct patient care. Three cheers to our amazing Edward nurses…Natalie Hoffman recognized for Most Impactful Project for her podium presentation on “Empowering Nurses with Ultrasound Guided Intravenous Skills,” Alexi Shepherd for Outstanding Podium Presentation on “Streamlining Patient Flow: The Impact of an Admission Nurse Role on Discharge Timeliness,” and Rachel Gerlach BSN, RN, CMSRN for Most Engaging Poster on “Sitter Discontinuation Initiative: Enhancing Staffing Efficiency and Patient Safety.” Last, but not least, our Cardiac Tele 2&8 and Center for Cardiac Health nurses Chiara Barkley, Kelly Smith, and Laurann Stevens presented at the podium on “Heart Failure Nurse Coaching: Supporting Patient Readiness, Readmission Reduction, and Promoting Continuity of Care,” which was a pilot project turned real job role that began as a kernel of an idea in my office 1.5 years ago!
