Transformative research and teaching on the relationships between human and environmental systems in cities and regions.
About us
The Discipline of Geography and Planning at Macquarie University undertakes transformative research and teaching on the complex relationships between human and environmental systems in cities and regions. We investigate key challenges facing people and environments and work with multiple stakeholders to create viable place-based solutions and sustainable futures. These solutions are founded on principles of care, justice, sustainability and the ethical co-production of knowledges. We offer a range of services and skills including qualitative, quantitative and creative research methods as well as social impact assessment and evaluation. Our work with diverse partners in government, industry and community has real world impacts, informing policy development, implementation and practice. Our research has made significant policy contributions in the areas of: climate and environmental change; social inclusion and equity, immigration and migrant populations; natural hazards, disaster risk reduction and flood management; urban planning and housing policy; and water management. Through our collaborative and inclusive teaching and research culture, we mentor and support current and future leaders to address some of the big challenges confronting people and environments.

I'm a bit late to the party, but happy World Town Planning day for November 8th! I am proud to have worked as a educator of future and current planners at Geography&Planning @MQ since 2017. Planning is such an important profession shaping the places we love. With Planning we can. And with Planning we Care.
It’s World Town Planning Day! 🎉 On 8 November, people around the world celebrate how good planning improves lives, strengthens communities, and builds sustainable, thriving cities. This year’s theme, “With Planning, We Can”, highlights how planning helps tackle today’s biggest challenges from housing affordability and climate resilience to community wellbeing and connected neighbourhoods. We’re proud to represent and advocate for planners and good planning. Major shout out to all the planners across the country – thanks for your passion and dedication to creating positive change for communities across Australia. Want to join the celebration? We’ve created a collection of social tiles and stories to help spread the word and showcase the power of planning. Download your fav, share it on your channels, and tag us to showcase the impact of planning in action! 👉 https://lnkd.in/dPTh7D5Q #WTPD #WorldTownPlanningDay #WTPD2025 #WithPlanningWeCan #planningmatters

Wonderful to see this important collection out in the world now! Big congratulations to Fiona Miller, Krishna K. Shrestha and Assoc. Prof. Sarah Wright on bringing together these great contributions.
Pleased to announce the publication of our "Handbook on Climate Change Vulnerability, Environments and Communities", edited together with Krishna K. Shrestha and Assoc. Prof. Sarah Wright published with Edward Elgar Publishing. This collection includes chapters by Nitya Rao, Yvonne Underhill-Sem, Ramesh Sunam, Michael Mikulewicz, Siri Veland, Meg Parsons, Katy Davis, Emily Potter, Donna Houston, Garima Jain, Vo Quoc Thanh, Hieu Trung Nguyen, Krishna K. Shrestha, Eranga Kokila Galappaththi, Fengshi Wu, Roxana Borquez, Fiona Miller, Christina Newport PhD, Navchaa Tugjamba PhD, Lauren Tynan and others. The handbook provides a detailed understanding of the spatially and socially differentiated nature of climate change vulnerability and the ways it is materially and discursively produced, together with an appreciation of the agency, capacity and resilience of communities. Many of the chapters are informed by field-based research on vulnerability and are strongly applied in orientation, seeking to inform policy and practice. Our aim in this collection was to bring together fresh perspectives on vulnerability from various disciplines, country contexts and theoretical viewpoints. There is a strong critical element underlying the scholarship of the collection in terms of engagement with the concept of vulnerability itself as well as the process of development that constructs and perpetuates vulnerability.
