At Urban Science, our commitment goes beyond the clients we serve. We’re also deeply invested in the communities where we live and work. Through year-round initiatives like our annual Community Giving program, which supports employee-nominated local nonprofits through corporate gifts and paid time off for employee volunteerism. Through this year’s Community Giving initiative, our colleague, Paul Schweiger dedicated his time and energy to support Detroit-based Make Food Not Waste — an organization focused on reducing food insecurity and environmental impact. The City of Southfield is leading the way in sustainability with its innovative new “Blueprint to Zero Food Waste,” developed in partnership with Make Food Not Waste. This initiative aims to tackle the growing problem of food waste by reducing waste, promoting food recovery, and supporting composting efforts throughout the community. With food waste accounting for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions, Southfield’s initiative is a critical step toward achieving Michigan’s goal of a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030. This initiative is just one example of how cities can take concrete steps to address sustainability challenges.
