More than 80% of the people we serve live alone — and as daylight shortens, isolation can deepen. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) impacts millions each year, especially during late fall and winter. Our Wellness Checks with each home-delivered meal and Community Connections Friendly Call brighten the season for homebound neighbors who need connection the most. Bill spent years struggling with homelessness, but today he’s safely housed. Through recovery and as someone living with a disability, he says Meals on Wheels West gives him something priceless: stability, comfort, and the peace of mind of knowing where his next meal will come from. With partnerships with The People Concern,Community Corporation of Santa Monica, Step Up, and other social service and housing agencies, our meals through our Food & Shelter program act as a rent subsidy — helping formerly unhoused clients stay housed and preventing a return to homelessness. #MealsonWheels programs across the country are facing mounting operational challenges as federal funding delays, administrative disruptions, and increased community need strain local chapters. Nearly 90% of providers rely on federal reimbursements, and many say they cannot sustain services for more than a month without those funds. Long waitlists are growing, and some programs have begun turning away eligible seniors for the first time. Our Executive Director, Kaylee Hawkins, spoke with POLITICO and described this year as a “compoundment of challenges,” including natural disasters, local budget issues, and now funding disruptions. For the first time in its history, we have had to establish a waitlist due to demand outpacing capacity.
