Project Feature • The architecture of Travis Heights Historic Home is a stunning blend of Victorian vernacular and contemporary loftiness, unified through a glassy, north-facing addition. Big things are happening at Austin Angels ! 🎉 This past Friday, we celebrated the groundbreaking of our soon to be, new building! This week, construction will begin on a beautiful, intentionally designed space created with our team and community in mind. 👷♀️ A massive shoutout to Chet Morgan, AIA, LEED AP and the team at Michael Hsu Office of Architecture for all of their hard (and heart) work poured into this project! It’s a milestone that has me reflecting on how far we’ve come. From my first day as an intern 6 years ago, working out of a tiny office that was busting at the seams, to making it work in a very old church building for the last 3 years and those coffee shop coworking days when the AC in the church building just couldn’t keep up. I've cherished the moments of magic in each space that our team has worked endlessly to reach and serve the children, youth and families in our community. Every chapter has brought us closer to this moment. It has led us here. Project Feature • Tucked quietly behind hedges on a 5,000-square-metre lot in Austin sits one of Texas’s oldest brick homes. Built in 1851 by James Gibson Swisher – a Texas ranger and signatory of the Texas Declaration of Independence – the house was constructed using bricks fired along the nearby banks of the Colorado River. Though the residence has undergone various additions over the decades – including a Victorian upgrade in 1889 – architect Michael Hsu recently oversaw an opportunity to reimagine it with both sensitivity and depth. Projects like La Condesa and Uchi demonstrated that a thoughtful, international minimalism could fit right into Austin’s early-aughts food boom, while the city’s new Project Transitions direct provider of housing for people living with HIV and AIDS proves hospitality can go further than fine dining. Hsu has gone further than Austin over the decades, with an office there and another in Houston, and team members in Dallas, Denver, Nashville, and Louisville.
