Each year, TIME selects the most impactful inventions shaping the future. This year, four Newlab member companies earned a spot. These startups aren’t just bringing new ideas to market. They’re transforming core industrial sectors. Each one is part of a broader story about what it takes to build critical technology in the real world. WindBorne Systems for Artificial Intelligence WindBorne is a weather forecasting system, working to close data gaps in the atmosphere with their constellation of long-lasting weather balloons. These balloons measure temperature, wind speed, pressure, humidity, and more. The company feeds the data into its own AI model to produce forecasts that are more accurate than those of government agencies. Voltpost for Green Tech Voltpost is making it faster and cheaper to add new EV charging points by retrofitting existing infrastructure, like conventional lampposts, wooden utility poles, and lamps in historic districts. Drivers use an app to unlock the cable and plug to charge their vehicle, providing convenient and affordable charging access while reducing the cost, timing, and footprint of chargers. Light Phone for Consumer Electronics Light Phone creates simple devices made to be used as little as possible, making users more present and connected. In April, the Light Phone III launched with more of the features customers expect from a modern-day phone, including a camera, basic GPS navigation, 5G hotspot capabilities, and a Yellow Pages-like directory—but no browser or social media apps. Sway for Manufacturing & Material Sway created an environmentally-friendly plastic spun from farmed seaweed. These plastics are being used by distributors to create retail bags, mailers, shrink film, and more. The material can be fed through legacy plastic-bag lines and match polyethylene’s toughness, while remaining fully compostable.

Michigan plays a leading role in building a strong domestic drone sector by leveraging its manufacturing base, engineering talent, and statewide infrastructure to develop, test, commercialize, and scale advanced air mobility technologies. We’re proud to partner with the MI Office of Future Mobility and Electrification and NextEnergy to identify and deploy transformative drone technologies that solve urgent challenges across public safety, environmental monitoring, infrastructure, and beyond. This is a rare opportunity for startups to collaborate directly with state agencies, fast-track adoption, and demonstrate the real-world value of AAM solutions. The state will partner with Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, Michigan Department of Transportation, Michigan State Police, Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, and Michigan Department of Natural Resources to offer five grants. Selected teams will use AAM technologies to address agency-specific challenges, drive public sector innovation, stimulate commercial growth, and build broader public understanding of these technologies. Apply now and help shape the future of advanced air mobility in Michigan: https://lnkd.in/gvAh7DKv

Isotopia, the blending of humanity, technology, and nature, was the theme of this year’s New Climate Futures. Last week at Newlab Brooklyn, that idea guided the conversations as we welcomed over 1,400 founders, investors, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore the critical technologies shaping our climate future. Sensorium, a sculpture by Dustin Yellin, stood as an expression of that theme and a catalyst for dialogue throughout the day. 73 startups showcased solutions across energy, mobility, industry, and the built environment, each designed to deliver real-world climate outcomes. On stage, conversations with leaders explored how we can build partnerships, mobilize capital, and align policy to accelerate the commercialization of the critical technologies the world urgently needs. A highlight of the day was a keynote fireside chat with Tom Steyer of Galvanize, underscoring the urgent need to scale climate innovation. Thank you to our attendees, partners, members, and sponsors, including Siemens, Fictiv, New York City Economic Development Corporation, Crux, and NYSERDA for making this event possible.
