If anyone is interested in developing their skills in Mental Health Counseling, a quick thought based on my experience that might be helpful. 💬 Here are some tips for developing this skill: Start with self-awareness. The best counselors are deeply in tune with their own emotions, triggers, and values. You can’t guide others through healing if you’re disconnected from your own inner world. Listen to understand, not to respond. True empathy comes from holding space for another person’s story without judgment or the need to “fix” them. Sometimes, being fully present is the most powerful thing you can offer. Learn from every interaction. Whether it’s a class discussion, a client session, or a casual conversation; every encounter teaches you something about human behavior, resilience, and connection. Prioritize compassion over perfection. Growth in this field isn’t linear. You’ll make mistakes, feel uncertain, and face tough moments, but staying grounded in compassion, for yourself and others, makes all the difference. Keep learning. The field of mental health is always evolving. Read, attend workshops, seek supervision, and stay curious about new perspectives and modalities.

Things that you can do to get the most out of counseling 1. Be picky about who you work with and make sure that they’re a good fit. Find someone who you see yourself talking with and who specializes in what you need support with. 2. Supplement therapy by doing things outside of session. This can be reading credible mental health sources, journaling, doing a workbook and other mental health-related homework assignments throughout the week. 3. Do the homework assignments, even if they seem pointless because they are small. Simple assignments or therapeutic strategies can be effective. Harness the Power of Cold Water for Mental Wellbeing Recent studies suggest that cold water exposure may have a positive impact on mood and mental health. Exposing yourself to cold water (such as immersing your hand in ice water) can stimulate physiological changes that may help alleviate symptoms of depression. Key findings include: Increased production of neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine, associated with improved mood and motivation Potential improvements in mood, mental wellbeing, and symptoms of depression and anxiety.
