This week marks an important step forward for Aboriginal housing outcomes with the Commonwealth Government announcing a dedicated First Nations stream in Round 3 of the Housing Australia Future Fund. The Aboriginal Housing and Homelessness Forum welcomes this commitment, which includes $600 million in funding for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing organisations, access to concessional loans, a First Nations concierge within Housing Australia and a 10 per cent First Nations tenancy target for new social housing delivered through this round. We acknowledge and thank the many Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, leaders and advocates who have long called for a HAFF stream that recognises the scale and urgency of the housing crisis facing our communities. We also recognise the Commonwealth’s work in strengthening First Nations housing outcomes and embedding the Closing the Gap Priority Reform 2, Building the Community Controlled Sector, into this approach. AHHF Chair and AHV CEO, Darren Smith, shares, “This is an important first step towards the scale of investment needed to address the housing crisis faced by Aboriginal people. It responds to years of advocacy from ACCOs at every level of government.” Read the statement: https://lnkd.in/gs4G8xK7

Our vision is that Aboriginal Victorians are able to secure appropriate, affordable housing as a pathway to better lives
About us
Aboriginal Housing Victoria (AHV) is an Aboriginal community organisation responsible for managing over 1,500 rental properties for Aboriginal and /or Torres Strait Islander people living in Victoria. AHV’s vision is to ensure that Aboriginal Victorians secure appropriate, affordable housing as a pathway to better lives and stronger communities. In addition to being the largest Aboriginal Registered Housing Agency in Australia, AHV is the lead agency for Victoria’s Aboriginal housing and homelessness policy, Mana-na worn-tyeen maar-takoort. As the housing policy lead in the Aboriginal community, AHV has dual roles to hold the Government to account in securing the resources and reforms to implement the policy, while we support sector development to empower Victoria’s Aboriginal community to determine its chosen housing future.

Last week we joined Assemble, Housing Choices Australia and HESTA – together with Federal Minister for Housing, Homelessness and Cities, the Hon. Clare O'Neil MP – to celebrate the opening of Swift Walk, delivered with support from the Housing Australia Future Fund funding provided by Housing Australia. This project represents a major step forward in how social and affordable housing can be delivered. With 272 social and affordable homes now available in Kensington, this project shows what is possible when Government, institutional investors and community housing providers come together. We want to acknowledge the leadership shown by Assemble in bringing this partnership and project to life, and the commitment of capital partner HESTA, whose investment is helping deliver secure, high-quality housing where it is needed most. AHV is proud to work alongside Housing Choices Australia to manage the social housing within the precinct. Importantly, 10% of these social homes are allocated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander renters and managed by AHV, ensuring culturally safe, appropriate housing close to transport, jobs, education, nature and daily life. Today, Assemble, Housing Choices Australia and HESTA, joined by the Honourable Clare O'Neil MP, Federal Minister for Housing, and other project partners, celebrated the official opening of Swift Walk, which is supported by Housing Australia Future Fund Facility (HAFFF) funding provided by Housing Australia. Located in Kensington, Melbourne, the large Build-to-Rent development delivers 362 homes across five buildings, including 272 affordable and social homes, and features new green spaces and community infrastructure in a location close to transport, major employment hubs and key hospitals. With investment from capital partner HESTA and delivered and managed through a strategic partnership between Assemble and tier-one community housing provider Housing Choices Australia, Swift Walk demonstrates a new model for delivery of large-scale social and affordable housing bringing together Government, institutional investors and community housing expertise to deliver much-needed housing for Australians on lower and middle incomes. “The combination of HESTA’s leadership, the Australian Government’s HAFFF program, and Assemble’s innovative partnership with Housing Choices Australia means that high-quality mixed-tenure rental homes can be delivered at scale — and in locations near public transport, jobs and daily amenity,” said Assemble CEO Carolyn Viney. In addition to HAFFF funding, the project is supported by debt funding from ANZ and Treasury Corporation of Victoria. The buildings will be managed by Assemble in partnership with Housing Choices Australia in close collaboration with specialist community housing provider Aboriginal Housing Victoria, ensuring that the homes provide security and long-term stability for all residents, including 10% of the social homes prioritised for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents. Swift Walk is one of the many housing assets Assemble intends deliver as part of its strategy to deliver 17,000 homes, including social and affordable homes delivered in partnership with Housing Choices Australia and other community housing providers, and manage $15 billion in housing assets by 2034. Australia’s first Treaty is now law👏🏽 Assembly members gathered yesterday evening to sign Australia’s first Treaty at Birrarung Wilam, surrounded by family and Community. Grounded in culture, the ceremony included a stirring performance from Uncle Kutcha Edwards and a powerful speech delivered by Uncle Alan Brown from the Elders' Voice. Thank you to Uncle Andrew Gardiner and Uncle Bill Nicholson for welcoming us on to Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country. This morning, the Assembly met with the Government and the Governor of Victoria where the signing was finalised. Thank you to everyone who has walked with us on this journey of Truth and Treaty. Last week, our team travelled to Whadjuk Noongar Country to attend the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) National Housing Conference 2025 in Boorloo/Perth. CEO Darren Smith joined the panel 'Victoria’s Big Housing Build in action: responsive housing for diverse needs', alongside sector leaders from Homes Victoria and St Kilda Community Housing. Darren spoke about the importance of self-determination and culturally safe, responsive housing models that deliver lasting outcomes for Aboriginal Victorians – from crisis responses to long-term, sustainable homes. The Liberal-Nationals say they want to listen to Aboriginal voices, so let us be clear: we want Treaty. Aboriginal Housing Victoria stands in strong support of Treaty and the work of the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria. We call on the Liberal-National Party, and all political leaders in Victoria, to respect the voices of Aboriginal Victorians. Voices that have been silenced for too long. Treaty is the pathway to justice, equity and a stronger future for all Victorians.
