“The data is clear. The solutions are known. The time for reform is now,” outgoing ACEM President Dr Stephen Gourley said on the release of ACEM's new report, 'Still Waiting: Trends in Mental Health Presentations to Australian Emergency Departments'. Almost a decade after emergency physicians first called for urgent reform for Australia's mental health care system, this latest report shows not only that public hospital EDs still remain the only option for many people needing acute mental health care, but the data analysed points to further decline. Dr Gourley said there is hope of turning things around, highlighting the early successes seen in the ACT from that jurisdiction's 'whole-of-hospital' approach to reducing ED bed block and patient waiting times as a possible solution. New data shows some patients with serious mental health conditions are waiting more than 23 hours for a bed in emergency departments, as emergency physicians warn of "profound consequences" without urgent action from all levels of government. A new report by ACEM has detailed an overstretched and under-resourced sector, leaving patients waiting for clinically unsafe periods and without appropriate care, with 10 per cent of patients waiting more than 23 hours for a bed — seven hours longer than they were less than a decade ago. "It's really sad … these are real human beings, someone's family member," said outgoing ACEM president Dr Stephen Gourley. "I have seen cases of people being kept in ED for over a week … it's busy, noisy, the lights don't go off … that's almost an inhumane treatment." Find out more:
