Briefly stepping away from her role as our Planning and Performance Manager, Claudia Barton joined Regional Manager Leith Hawkins on a privately-managed conservation area in the state’s north-west to help construct a grazing exclosure as part of our ecological monitoring program. Grazing exclosures are a valuable tool. They allow us to compare grazed and ungrazed areas to measure how grazing pressure influences native vegetation, groundcover, soil condition and biodiversity. The insights gained help guide evidence-based recommendations for landholders and support long-term habitat resilience. Leith will return to the site in the coming months to collect data and assess ecological changes across the paired monitoring plots. #PrivateLandConservation

🌿 Meet John Taylor, a long-term landholder in the Upper Hunter whose commitment to conservation is helping protect one of NSW’s rarest ecosystems - the Hunter Floodplain River Red Gum Woodland. In his time on the land John has moved from awareness to action, carefully managing his property to conserve 20 hectares of vulnerable forest while restoring another 20 hectares. His story is a powerful example of how private landholders can make a lasting impact on biodiversity while maintaining productive farming operations. #PrivateLandConservation Local Land Services

🌊 From the sea to the Snowy Mountains. ⛰️ Some of the tree guards protecting new seedlings at Shannons Flat, on the Murrumbidgee River south of Canberra, have an unexpected origin — they’re repurposed oyster pots, some with oyster shells still attached. ♻️ Senior Regional Conservation Officer Hannah Windley recently visited Guy and Cheryl to see how newly planted snow gums, candlebark saplings and native shrubs have fared frosts, wind, kangaroos and rabbits. She was surprised to see how the unique tree guards and fence posts had protected the young plants and was wowed by the difference in grass height. 🌱💚 Hannah said the oyster pots were donated to Landcare NSW by Tathra Oysters and distributed to local landholders for reuse. 🦪 We think the innovative tree guards are a winner. #PrivateLandConservation

👻🎃 Something spooky is lurking in the bush… or is it just a swamp wallaby caught at a tricky moment? This curious wallaby, caught at the perfect angle for a Halloween illusion, is a reminder that landholders across NSW are protecting land for native species (even the ones that look like weird swamp monsters on camera). The real treat? Healthy land, healthy wildlife. 🌿 #PrivateLandConservation #Halloween NatureMapr

With funds to support conservation management, Central West grazier John Blanch says the yield under one of our agreements is better than he'd have secured through other options. And giving back to the environment is a bonus he and his customers can be proud of. Over the coming 4 years, we'll be working with landholders like John to permanently protect an additional 120,000 hectares of privately‑owned NSW land.
