We are delighted that Reuben College has received The Australian Award for International Architecture. The jury stated: 'fjcstudio has masterfully reimagined one of Oxford’s treasured heritage precincts. The architects have navigated the formidable challenges of hazardous materials and complex historic fabric, to deliver a transformative new college – Oxford’s first since 1990 – that balances reverence for the past with the needs of tomorrow’s scholars'. Full Article here: https://lnkd.in/gzTPt5Ue Congratulations to our Oxford Studio on exceptional hard work and commitment. We understand that the college is delighted with the outcome. Landmark Group Australia is bringing new energy to Edgecliff, lodging revised plans for two residential towers up to 18 storeys at 8-10 New McLean Street, right beside Edgecliff Railway Station. The proposal includes 246 apartments, 84 one-bed, 112 two-bed, and 50 three-bed, plus 281 parking spaces. Mandated affordable housing ensures the project reflects NSW Government aims to increase density near the soon-to-be revived Woollahra Station, with all homes within 800 metres of the precinct. Designed by fjcstudio, the new vision prioritises quality, sustainability, and inclusivity, continuing Edgecliff’s legacy of high-rise living that began in the 1960s. This is a prime example of ongoing investment in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, connecting residents with transport and amenities. Read more https://lnkd.in/gHZ8TwxK

  • fjcstudio honoured with three awards at the 2025 International Architecture Awards We are pleased to share that fjcstudio has been recognised on the global stage, receiving three International Architecture Awards from The Chicago Athenaeum Museum for Architecture and Design. Each of the awarded projects reflects our commitment to architecture that fosters belonging, supports learning, and strengthens community. These include Darlington Public School in the category of Schools and Universities, Yellamundie Library at Liverpool Civic Place in the category of Libraries, and Reuben College at the University of Oxford in the category of Restoration and Renovation. The awards were presented at a ceremony in Athens, where fjcstudio was one of only two practices, alongside Zaha Hadid Architects, to be recognised with multiple accolades. To be selected from over 1,000 submissions worldwide is a tremendous honour and a reflection of the powerful stories embedded in each of these projects. Well done to our exceptional fjc team!

We are delighted to announce a series of well-deserved promotions within our studio. These appointments recognise the commitment, talent, and leadership each has brought to both our projects and the life of the studio. We are especially pleased to share that David Moody has been appointed Principal and will now lead our Melbourne Studio alongside Geoff Croker. David joined fjcstudio in 2014, bringing more than a decade of industry experience. Since then, he has played a central role in a number of significant projects in Victoria, establishing himself as a highly valued member of the fjc team. He combines a deep commitment to design and public placemaking with strong technical expertise, working across community, education, commercial and civic projects in Australia and internationally. In recent years, David has led teams on complex commercial and educational projects, including Bennetts Lane, 200 Victoria Parade, Alatus Peninsula Grammar, and the SBS Headquarters at Federation Square. He also played a pivotal role in the multi-award-winning Bunjil Place, where he worked closely with the City of Casey to develop a new workplace strategy and oversee the design and fitout of their council workplace. Well done to the entire fjcstudio team. As a studio, we hold ourselves to high expectations, not only in the projects we deliver, but in the way we continue to grow, learn, and support one another. We are proud to acknowledge the exceptional talent, expertise, and commitment that defines fjcstudio.

In a recent interview with Architecture & Design (Australia), Richard Francis-Jones, Design Director at fjcstudio, pulls back the curtain on the “invisible” narratives at the heart of 'The Fencing of Architecture and the Villa of the Architect': the fence as a symbol of exclusion, the villa as an expression of privilege. Together, they tell a story of separation from each other, from our environment, and from the deeper values of shared life. “The fence is the spatial expression of exclusion; a thin line, indifferent to landscape, that separates the ‘mine’ from the ‘not mine’… The villa, conversely, is the architectural expression of individuality and privilege; the separated dwelling that surveils, controls, and retreats from the communal.” The conversation invites us to see these familiar forms not as passive features of our built world, but as powerful forces shaping how we live, relate, and belong. “The challenge is not to produce more, faster, but to restore the conditions for being, for belonging; for architecture to become a form of care.” Read the full interview here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gChERdyg and join us for a night of provocation, recognition, and reimagining our built environment.

  • A place of quiet connection and everyday rhythm. Located on the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges, Korumburra Community Hub is a multi-purpose community space that brings together the heritage of the township with the needs of a growing population. It supports young families moving into the region while continuing to serve older residents from surrounding farming communities. The building was carefully shaped around mature trees, views, and topography. It sits comfortably in the landscape, offering calm, accessible spaces filled with light, air, and openness. More than a facility, the Hub has become a shared heart for Korumburra. A place for people to meet, learn, and belong. A heartfelt thank you to Lachlan Outhred for so beautifully capturing the spirit of this project, credits to Threaded Films

  • We’re thrilled to return to Brisbane with 'The Fencing of Architecture and The Villa of the Architect', a thought-provoking event presented in partnership with the Australian Institute of Architects and proudly supported by ThinkBrick. Building on the momentum of our sold-out Sydney session, this critical discussion deepens the conversation and invites new perspectives. This second edition offers a timely exploration of two of the most destructive architectural typologies we have developed: the fence and the villa. The fence establishes boundaries, excludes, and asserts control. The villa idealises detachment, shaping a landscape of private retreat. Together, they inform much of our suburban condition and raise essential questions about architecture’s role in reinforcing patterns of isolation and environmental degradation. A considered panel of architects, designers and cultural leaders will lead the discussion. Richard Francis-Jones, Design Director at fjcstudio; Dr. Zuzana Kovar, Co-Director at Zuzana & Nicholas; Dirk Yates, Director at Speculative Architecture; Chris Saines, Director of the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art; and Erin McDonald, Associate Director Blaklash, will explore the ethical dimensions and broader implications of these architectural typologies. Like many parishes, struggling with beautiful but challenging heritage buildings, Church Hill Anglican was seeking a solution that provided a weather proof connection between the State Heritage listed Garrison Church and church hall. What began as a link soon became the vehicle for outreach and a welcoming new threshold to the precinct. Transparency allows the vibrant activities of the church to be on display, rather than hidden behind stone walls. A new forecourt and children’s play, refurbished hall interiors and new amenities will further support the daily, weekend and special event activity of Church Hill. Exciting progress as the steel is installed in the tight space between the buildings. A single stump column above the entry portal, supports the floating canopy roof. A feat of engineering excellence and carefully considered tolerances in relation to the frameless glass walls. We appreciate the incredible dedication of Church Hill’s building committee, the project managers, Midson Group Pty Ltd, the exceptional skills and collaborative attitude of Laycock, SDA Structures and Paul Davies heritage consultant. Thank you to fjc’s wonderful team led by Annie Hensley and Daniel Bourke, daily management by Wei Fen Soh and interiors led by M Mariska. Also Delphie Laforest Pradet and Andrew Chung.

  • We are delighted to share that Reuben College, University of Oxford has been awarded the 2025 International Chapter Hugh O’Neil Award for Heritage by the Australian Institute of Architects. As Oxford’s 39th and first new college in nearly 30 years, Reuben College is a transformative adaptation of Grade II listed buildings within the University’s Science Area and Central Conservation Area. The project unites the 1901 Jackson and 1934 Worthington buildings of the Radcliffe Science Library, the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, and the 160-year-old Abbot’s Kitchen, reimagining them as inclusive, contemporary spaces for graduate study, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community life. One of Oxford’s largest decarbonisation and decontamination initiatives, the project removed over 800 tons of asbestos contaminated materials, while preserving heritage fabric and restoring traditional carpentry and masonry. The design establishes a vibrant social heart in repurposed laboratories, integrates a new Collections Teaching and Research Centre uniting Oxford’s four museums, and creates accessible facilities that support the College’s diverse community. Despite the complexity of heritage approvals, procurement, and pandemic disruptions, the outcome has been an outstanding success for the college and a benchmark of innovation in adaptive reuse. In the words of the Jury: “Reuben College by fjcstudio is an exemplar of exceptional architecture underscored by the integration of solutions to diverse challenges. Indeed, the fully realised built outcome demonstrates design excellence; sensitivity to heritage character and context; skilful adaptive reuse; respect for craft and the restoration of traditional carpentry and masonry structures; extensive decontamination due to past use; integration of allied disciplines; management of challenging project, brief and procurement issues; and thoughtful consideration of user and stakeholder needs. The result is outstanding architecture that wonderfully exemplifies the value of skilled and experienced architects achieving in all aspects of our profession.” Congratulations to our UK fjc team. We are honoured by this recognition and grateful to all who contributed to this special project. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gYkhRFwn
