Melbourne's marketplace for over 140 years.

About us

The Queen Victoria Market has been Melbourne’s marketplace since 1878. It is loved by locals and remains among the top international tourist destinations in Victoria. For over 140 years, the Market still operates as a traditional market and has been recognised as an historic place by Heritage Victoria and is registered on the National heritage list. As the largest open air market in the Southern Hemisphere, the 'Vic Market' houses more than 500 small businesses, including of a wide variety of fresh food traders and a large number of general merchandise traders, plus seasonal night market food and specialty shopping traders. The Queen Victoria Market Pty Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of Melbourne. Queen Victoria Market Pty Ltd is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Market. The company vision of the Queen Victoria Market Pty Ltd is to create a thriving and diverse marketplace for future generations. This is achieved through being responsive to customer needs, creating a platform for small businesses to prosper, and realising social, economic and environmental benefits for stakeholders. The Queen Victoria Market and surrounding precinct is currently progressing through a five-year program of restoration and renewal, begun in 2017. Known as the Queen Victoria Market Precinct Renewal (QVMPR) program, the $250 million City of Melbourne program is the biggest investment in the council’s history.

📣 TWO new and upgraded tram stops for Melbourne! Tram works have now finished at the corner of Elizabeth and Victoria Street 🚃 That means commuting into the city and visiting the Queen Victoria Market just got a whole lot easier! Not only are there new tracks and a brand new stop on Victoria Street, we've also expanded the existing tram stop at Elizabeth Street to make it more accessible for everybody - and how good does that bluestone look? 🤩

  • NAIDOC Week is a time to listen, learn and show meaningful support for First Nations peoples. This NAIDOC Week – and every week – shop local and support First Nations artists and businesses. In July 2023, Queen Victoria Market introduced a long-overdue change: banning the sale of inauthentic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander products.  Now, when you shop for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander products at the Market, you can be confident that you are directly supporting First Nations artists, creatives and businesses.  Read more:  https://lnkd.in/g4MJn2Za  Learn more about #NAIDOCWeek: https://www.naidoc.org.au/

  • This #PlasticFreeJuly, we're giving old plastics a second life.  We’re proud to bring a new circular economy experience to Queen Victoria Market as part of our ongoing collaboration with STREAT and MAKE Studios Melbourne. This July, MAKE will launch their Precious Plastic shredder and extruder at the Market, allowing visitors to create functional everyday products from recycled plastics.  This hands-on initiative is an exciting example of how local partnerships can spark innovation and creativity in sustainable spaces. Visit the Purpose Precinct this July to craft your own custom recycled products and explore the future of circular economy.

We’re thrilled to team up again with STREAT on our next circular economy collaboration at the Purpose Precinct, thanks to support from the City of Melbourne. From July, visitors to the Queen Victoria Market can get hands-on with micro-recycling by transforming plastic waste into custom recycled products. Our Precious Plastic shredder and extruder will give people the opportunity to make their own recycled plastic products, such as pens and carabiners. This installation, funded through the Circular Economy Small Business Grant, is all about giving waste a new life and creating circular behaviour change. Be sure to pop in to try it for yourself and stay tuned for our upcoming hands-on workshops about circular design and community-led sustainability. • Recently, we partnered with renowned Melbourne artist David Booth (aka Ghostpatrol) and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation to create a spectacular mural in the heart of the Market.    The produce-packed mural was created with the artistic help of local students and sims to connect young people with fresh, seasonal produce and foster healthy eating habits.  Check out the video or come see the mural at the top of A Shed.
