Melbourne’s shift to higher-density living is expected to put pressure on schools in the inner city, as well as the northern and western suburbs, as Victoria looks to find classroom space for an extra 100,000 children in the next decade. But a school in the city’s inner west says chances are being missed to acquire land in the area to prepare for long-term population growth, while education authorities refuse to act until the existing nearby school is nearly full. “Predatory” and unlawful administrative fees charged by strata management companies must be stamped out and owners refunded, advocates say. The full story: https://lnkd.in/gEfuuPgd
The $471 billion sector acting ‘above the law’: Why Victorian strata owners are demanding mass refunds. It’s a practice VCAT has branded an "unlawful demand for payment". Yet, documents obtained by The Age show major strata management companies are continuing to automate "administration" and "penalty" fees onto the bills of Victorian apartment owners. In today’s story, we expose how: Managers are charging "debt recovery" fees of up to $150 without the required tribunal orders. The industry’s peak body, Strata Community Association (VIC), has described the VCAT rulings as "rough justice", arguing compliant owners shouldn't subsidise their neighbours. Grassroots advocates Strata Owners Alliance are now calling for a mass refund scheme for what they describe as a "predatory rort", while the industry wants the legal authority to charge the fees they say are a necessary deterrent. With the state government’s expert panel review into the Owners Corporations Act due to report on Monday, which way will they go on this issue? Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/g_KJyA7Z

The nation’s union and employer group watchdog has called out Victoria and the Allan government’s infrastructure projects for hosting more alleged corruption, intimidation and union and bikie standover activity than any other jurisdiction in the country. The full story: https://lnkd.in/gN2Y2snB
This is a highly significant intervention from Murray Furlong as reported by Nick McKenzie Cleaning up the #construction industry is going to take concerted action from all players and far too few are meeting that challenge. “The behaviour you walk past is the behaviour you accept. [CFMEU administrator Mark Irving] and his considerable efforts need to be matched by all other major participants in the industry. This includes tier one builders, their clients and funders, major contractors, employer associations and other unions, in addition to state and Commonwealth governments.” And with 60 per cent of complaints coming from Victoria’s supposed signature infrastructure programs, what better place to get seriously moving than here? https://lnkd.in/gkpMqNBC ACCIONA Laing O'Rourke Lendlease Webuild John Holland
