About us

Victoria Police was established in 1853. It provides policing services to the Victorian community 24 hours a day, seven days a week, working to keep more than 6 million Victorians safe. Police officers and Protective Services Officers (PSOs) are supported in their roles by public service professionals who work as administrators, managers, and specialists in a range of functions such as legal services, accounting, psychology and forensic sciences. Our workforce is expanding with the recruitment of more than 3000 police, 100 PSOs and the introduction of the Supervising Police Custody Officer role. Victoria Police is an inclusive, equal-opportunity employer that values employees’ skills and experience. We offer flexible, challenging and rewarding careers that make a real difference to the community. Effective frontline response service delivery is provided through 54 Police Service Areas (PSAs), split across 21 divisions within four regions - North West Metro, Southern Metro, Eastern, and Western. These regional boundaries correspond with those of other Victorian government departments, enhancing cross-department service delivery, particularly in the area of emergency management. • If you think life in the Major Crime Scene Unit is like an episode of CSI or Bones, you’re not entirely wrong … just think less dramatic lighting and way more paperwork. Senior Constable Black joined the Major Crime Scene Unit in 2022. After spending a few years in general duties in Preston, she finally landed the role she’d been dreaming about since she was eight years old (she even found a school assignment recently that mentions it!). Now, she spends her days (and nights) photographing, examining and collecting evidence from serious crime scenes right across Victoria, from inner-city incidents to remote locations. One day, she might be headed to a homicide in Mildura, the next a vehicle examination back near the office. No two days are the same, and that’s what's kept her hooked. She’s currently training as a bloodstain pattern analysis expert and says the best part of the job is the problem-solving. “It’s confronting but rewarding. Every scene is different, and every small detail can make a huge difference to an investigation.” When Black's not analysing crime scenes, she’s watching horror movies, gaming her way through ‘The Last of Us’ or ‘Skyrim’, and hanging out with her partner and elderly rescue cat, Billy.

  • Last month, an 82-year-old man was heading to his secret fishing spot on the Wimmera River in Horsham, when his mobility scooter’s brakes failed and he and the scooter ended up in the river. He wasn’t able to get out himself, but luckily, he flagged down a passer-by who called 000. Constable Salisbury and Constable McDonough were first on scene and didn't hesitate to get wet and help the man out of the water. Additional members arrived providing first aid before Ambulance Victoria turned up. Horsham SES then showed up, and with a bit of teamwork, they managed to get the scooter out of the water too.

  • Thanks to everyone who took part in this year’s Community Sentiment Survey. We had over 7600 responses, helping us identify the issues that matter most to you and your local community. The key issues identified include: 👮 Safety in public places 🔐 Safety of property and possessions 💉 Drugs and alcohol related issues It was also an opportunity to share your ideas on what could be done to make the community feel safer. The most frequently noted comments were more foot patrols, increased patrols at night and PSOs on transport and community locations. Police will work with their partners to come up with initiatives to address your safety concerns, which will also support the priorities set out in the 'A Safe Victoria' strategy. Victoria Police will continue to target and detect offenders, but there are number of things you can do to help keep your home and property secure. 🔒 Lock all doors including cars, garages, windows, gates and sheds. 🔑 Don’t leave spare keys outside – that rock is an obvious hiding spot! 👀 Keep your valuables like your wallet and keys out of sight at home. 🚗 Don’t leave valuables in your car. • Working for the Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) is no sunshine and roses, but Detective Leading Senior Constable Rebecca Gauci is prepared for the challenge. Originally a graphic designer, she submitted her application to join Victoria Police after attending her brother-in-law's graduation. So why MCIU? Bec loves being able to work in a specialist unit and use her expertise when called upon after a major collision. She values the importance of her role in supporting local police officers who attend the crash in the first instance. Her favourite part of her job is working with the families of those who have died, using her empathy and communication skills to support them – something her background as a detective in family violence has prepared her for. Bec’s road trip playlist of choice? A bit of Madonna, some pub rock classics or country. Curious to know more about MCIU? > https://lnkd.in/gC27qcT

  • Meet Sergeant Natalie. 👋 Nat is a Sergeant in general duties, and she is also a proud trans woman. From a young age, Nat knew there was a disconnect between how she felt and how she looked. Growing up in the ‘70s, there wasn’t the language to describe how she felt, and so she pushed the feelings down and carried on. In 2011, Nat joined Victoria Police at 43 years of age, after working as a project manager in IT and in need of a change. It was through counselling and support from the Victoria Police welfare unit and Pride Network – a community of Victoria Police employees who identify as LGBTIQA+ and their allies – that Nat was able to figure out who she was and confide in her family about how she was feeling. With the support of her family and colleagues, Nat openly came out as a trans woman in 2023, an experience that has been life changing for her. She is grateful for the support she’s received from her colleagues and friends, particularly those in the Victoria Police Trans and Gender Diverse Employee Network, where Nat is a member. Through her work as a peer support officer and LGBTIQA+ Liaison Officer (LLO), Nat has supported the LGBTIQA+ community, including other Victoria Police employees. ‘Part of my job is helping others navigate their way through stressful or difficult times that can occur either professionally or personally and sometimes both. In particular helping others come to terms with how they’re feeling and who they are, has been amazing and fulfilling and is the best part of my role.’ Victoria Police is proud to stand with Nat and celebrate the diversity of our members.

  • After 43 years of service, Sergeant Amanda Crowley is hanging up the reins. 🐎 Mandy graduated from the police Academy in 1983 and quickly joined the Mounted Branch, as a keen rider from the age of five. As the longest serving female member of the Mounted Branch, and the first in charge of rider and horse training, she’s seen many changes across her career. Notably, female members now make up the majority of the Mounted Branch and a whole troop of female riders can attend a job. Across her career, Mandy has mentored lots of officers and worked with around 15 horses and trained many more. She says picking her favourite horse is like picking her favourite child, but she can’t go past Randwick – the longest serving Victoria police horse who retired in 2021 (pictured in image 2). For Mandy, she’s grateful for being able to do what she loved for so long but is looking forward to a well-earned retirement with plenty of gardening on the cards. Thank you Mandy for your service and dedication.
