About us

SHoP Architects was founded twenty years ago to harness the power of diverse expertise in the design of buildings and environments that improve the quality of public life. Our inclusive, open-minded process allows us to effectively address a broad range of issues in our work: from novel programmatic concepts, to next-generation fabrication and delivery techniques, to beautifully crafted spaces that precisely suit their functions. Years ago we set out to prove that intelligent, evocative architecture can be made within real-world constraints. Today, our interdisciplinary staff of 180 is implementing that idea at critical sites around the world.

  • Incredible construction progress on our Atlassian Headquarters project in Sydney, designed to embody Atlassian’s core values of sustainability and workplace culture. Organized into six interconnected “habitats”—each a freestanding mass-timber structure supported by an efficient steel exoskeleton—the new tower is set to become the world’s tallest commercial hybrid-timber building and a global benchmark for carbon-sequestering, mass-timber construction. Time for another round of photos captured recently of Atlassian Central. Until you get up close, it's hard to appreciate the sheer size of internal timber structure. Hopefully these images will provide some sense of scale. Designed by SHoP Architects (New York) in collaboration with local firm BVN Architecture. Information c/o Built. Built and @Obayashi JV were engaged as part of an early contractor involvement agreement in 2020 to unlock the design, programme and construction methodology to achieve the aspirations of what will set a new benchmark in sustainability and smart workplaces. The new Atlassian building at 8-10 Lee Street will comprise of 75,000 square metres of GFA with retail amenities and new 137-room YHA accommodation space at its base, as well as new public realm around Central Station. It features innovative design principles including a striking timber design with a glass and steel exoskeleton façade, and an operable façade which will create distinct high-rise habitats featuring internal and external spaces within, an abundance of natural light and ventilation laced with deep soil plants. In line with Built, Dexus and Atlassian’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of smart and sustainable commercial buildings, the development has ambitious sustainability targets including: 50% reduction in embodied carbon emissions during construction compared to a conventional construction project 100% fossil fuel free and powered by renewable energy Additionally, it has a 5.5-star NABERS Energy Commitment Agreement and targeting a 6-star Green Star rating. The tower will feature an electricity-generating façade system with self-shade capabilities to reduce direct heat gain and mass timber construction (MTC), significantly lowering the building’s embodied carbon footprint. Take a peek inside the Joyce F. Brown Academic Building. The new addition to campus features 26 energy-efficient classrooms and studios, administrative offices, and the largest campus knitting lab in the U.S. It also introduces FIT’s first interior space designed specifically for connection outside the classroom—a full-floor student commons beneath a 20-foot-high ceiling, accessible via an express escalator. Reflecting FIT’s commitment to environmental stewardship, the building’s design and construction are projected to achieve LEED Gold certification. The opening of the Joyce F. Brown Academic Building marks a major milestone in FIT’s history and celebrates Dr. Brown’s transformative leadership. We’re thrilled to welcome our community in. #FITNYC #BuildingTheFuture Photos by Christopher Payne/ESTO
