COP30 Brazil: How your landscape architectural practice can reduce its own emissions. The most critical thing with climate change is emissions reductions. All businesses generate emissions, and the Australian Institute of Architects has a guide to help you reduce them. Our organization guide to climate positive, provides a clear simple checklist for action that your company can take. https://lnkd.in/gwvJme4S We found that 75% of emissions for Landscape Architectural and Architectural practices came from only four sources. Electricity 30.5%, Air travel 19.1%, ICT services 15.7% and local travel 9.9%. These can provide easy wins by not powering your office with fossil fuels by purchasing 100% green power, using Zoom and Teams instead of air travel, and replacing your petrol powered cars with electric vehicles for your office. You can use our detailed checklist on pages 24 and 25 to help your through other opportunities. The other critical finding was that offsets should only be used as a very last resort as they have questionable value and integrity. Our document on pages 32 and 33 provides a clear guide to due diligence that you should undertake before purchasing any offsets at all. Thanks to lead author Kate James and co-author Abi Kearney AILA for their great work on this volume two with excellent technical support and guidance from Alexander Stathakis. Editorial guidance and input on offset due diligence was by Martin O'Dea. Let’s do this. #landscapearchitecture #COP30 #GreenerTogether #LinkedInNewsAustralia #AILA #landscapearchitect

AILA Director’s Message – November 2025. Update from Andy Sharp AILA RLA, Vice-President https://lnkd.in/g8qN5PvX It has been an exciting few months for AILA as we continue to strengthen our organisation and celebrate the outstanding work of landscape architects across the country. The 2025 DARK Festival of Landscape Architecture in Hobart was a fantastic success and served as a powerful reminder of the creativity, leadership, and purpose that drives our profession. Congratulations to all our National Award winners for your inspiring contributions to making our cities healthier, more resilient, and more beautiful places to live. https://lnkd.in/g7uxikak We also welcomed two new Directors to the Board, Naomi Barun and Jocelyn Chiew, whose insights and experience will add great value as we focus on the future direction of the Institute. Following our Annual General Meeting on 31 October, the Board appointed its Office Bearers. Heath Gledhill will transition to President, I will serve as Vice President, and Espe Suarez Kelly has been appointed Company Secretary. Our new CEO, Grant Galvin, joins AILA on 17 November. Grant brings a strong background in business growth, organisational turnaround, and financial sustainability. His expertise will be instrumental as we strengthen AILA’s financial independence and long-term viability. Like many member-based organisations, AILA has faced some financial pressures in recent years. The Board is taking clear and deliberate steps to stabilise and strengthen the organisation’s financial position. With Grant’s leadership and the continued support of our members, we are confident in rebuilding AILA’s financial strength and securing a sustainable future for the Institute. We have also commenced work with Right Source from 4 November to support governance and operational improvements. In parallel, the Board has endorsed a revised committee structure to streamline efforts, improve alignment with our strategic goals, and create clearer pathways for member input and participation. Landscape Architecture at COP30 Brazil — Join the Global Conversation From 10–21 November, world leaders, policymakers, and innovators will gather in Belém, Brazil for COP30 — a pivotal moment to redefine how nations respond to the climate crisis. As landscape architects, we hold a unique global responsibility: to connect people with place, to design with nature, and to lead through evidence-based, regenerative design that supports both climate adaptation and community resilience. At the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), our 2025 Advocacy Manifesto (https://lnkd.in/gV3_SUpC) aligns with the global call to action by championing four priorities that echo the goals of COP30: 1. Policy & Regulatory Change — Embed green and blue infrastructure as global standards in urban planning and strengthen environmental protections that restore biodiversity. 2. Targeted Investment — Advocate for international and national funding streams dedicated to nature-based solutions that deliver measurable outcomes for health, climate, and economy. 3. Improved Governance & Delivery — Support cross-border leadership and coordination to ensure landscape-led, climate-resilient planning and equitable access to green space. 4. Knowledge & Capacity Building — Invest in global education, research, and skills development to empower the next generation of climate-positive designers and planners. >>> The world is watching — and listening. Landscape architects across the globe are shaping the dialogue from local streetscapes to international frameworks. Your insights can help position our profession as a key driver of nature-based climate action. >>> Share your perspective on LinkedIn and tag: #GreenerTogether #COP30 #LinkedInNewsAustralia #AILA #LandscapeArchitecture to be part of the global movement. Let’s show the world that the solutions to climate change are already growing — designed by landscape architects. **Photo credit: 10.11.2025 - Belem - Participants arrive to the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30). Championing Better Places for All Australians Last week, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) President Heath Gledhill joined leaders from the Australian Institute of Architects and the Planning Institute of Australia at Parliament House for the launch of the Parliamentary Friends of Urban Design. The event brought together parliamentarians and design professionals to highlight how thoughtful, integrated urban design can help tackle Australia’s biggest challenges — from housing and climate resilience to community wellbeing. As Heath shared, “Urban design is the connective tissue that makes cities work. When we design for people, nature, and place, we create communities that are not only liveable, but lovable.” Together, we’re advocating for national leadership in design excellence – ensuring that how we plan and shape our cities reflects the best of who we are. #LandscapeArchitecture #AILA #DesignForPeople #CityShaping #LiveableCities
