Following our announcement at last week’s AC/DC tribute, Council has been donated a Gibson SG Standard ’61 Cherry Angus guitar signed by Angus Young himself. Council plans to auction the guitar early next year to support a new Burwood Youth Music Development Project, creating opportunities and career pathways for young musicians, a key priority in our 10-year Creative Burwood Strategy. Huge thanks to Sony Music Entertainment Australia, Gibson, Inc. Australia, Angus and Ella Young and AC/DC management for their ongoing support. Council will continue to work with Angus and his wife Ella to ensure this project and similar initiatives come to life with their endorsement. Stay tuned for auction details and how you can help support Burwood’s next generation of musicians! John Faker GAICD

Last night, Mayor of Burwood Cr John Faker GAICD was recognised by Local Government NSW for an incredible 25 years of service to our community. Mayor John Faker is the longest serving Mayor of Burwood. He became its youngest ever Mayor when he was elected at the age of just 27 in 2002. Notably, he wrote his name in the history books by becoming the first ever popularly elected Mayor in Burwood in 2012. This vote of confidence from his community has continued, with 72% of votes after preferences in the 2021 and 2024 Local Government Elections upholding his title as one of the most popularly elected Mayors in NSW. Mayor John Faker is a passionate believer in the power of local councils working together. First elected as President of the Southern Sydney Region of Councils in 2013, he has held the position continuously for 12 years. Mayor Faker is a powerful advocate for his community, enjoys regularly meeting with residents to hear their concerns and aspirations for the future. Under his leadership, Burwood has gained a reputation as a strategic centre and a thriving city with cherished heritage conservation areas, world class transport, well designed buildings and inviting public spaces. Congratulations Mayor Faker on this remarkable achievement, and your ongoing dedication and service to the people of Burwood.

Today and everyday, we stand together to raise awareness and take action against family and domestic violence. Across Burwood, we are committed to supporting women experiencing violence, from initiatives like the Walk to End Domestic Violence to the launch of the Domestic Violence Hub. We also want to celebrate Nicole Yade from Women's & Girls' Emergency Centre (WAGEC), whose outstanding contributions to supporting women have been recognised by Marie-Claire Magazine and the Committee for Sydney, and who was Burwood’s 2025 Citizen of the Year. Her work is making a real difference in our community. Find support and resources via the link in our bio. Let’s continue to stand together, speak up, and support survivors. 💜 #InternationalDayfortheEliminationofViolenceAgainstWomen
