Thanks NAB 🥳 Early 2025 Indigenous Connection Cultural Knowledge Providers (CKPs) Francilla Puruntatameri, Virgil Kerinaiua, Mary Munkara, Agnella Tupungwuti and Ian Gumbula co-designed and delivered a research project titled Exploring Cultural Capital Development and Local Emergency Management on Country. Evaluating local emergency management norms and identifying opportunities to embrace knowledge for Country, culture, people and community. Increasing natural disaster readiness and resilience. Fast forward 9months. Friday last week we made last minute dash from a remote community 650kms away from Darwin and began preparations for an inbound cyclone Fina. Saturday night we hung on to our hats as the cyclone navigated a path impacting both Wurrumiyanga (Tiwi Islands) and Darwin. Sunday morning, ian mongunu gumbula & Brad Martin cleaned up debris around home pre-flight to Melbourne. Darwin airport being open for just a few hours. Monday afternoon, our work was recognised as Highly Commended in the 2025 Resilient Australia National Research for Impact Award. The whole IC team are grateful to the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience. Evaluating institutional relationships on Country. The data story: Increased human interaction = increased institutional trust. If we don't connect, we don't trust. If we don't measure, we don't know... At the Water in the Bush Conference last week Indigenous Connection presented findings from our recent project, Exploring Cultural Capital Development and Water Security on Country. 12 Cultural Knowledge Providers (CKPs) across 3 remote communities with complex water needs, supported IC to evaluate relationships within the water system. An incredible project that combined Indigenous knowledge, behavioural science, data science & market systems development, all on the one team. Co-designing research systems & processes to capture context informed relationship insights. Indigenous Connection created equity in the water security challenge on Country. Supporting our client Northern Territory Government to embrace knowledge for Country, Culture, People and Community 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽 Presenting at the conference was a great a opportunity to encourage the audience to rethink existing norms and identify opportunities to embrace knowledge on Country. Creating cultural economic norms and new ways of being out bush, business-as-usual. We thank the NTG's Remote Water Team for the opportunity. Indigenous Connection mission is to enable relationships. Just a fraction of our story over the past few months saw IC building relationships, re-thinking Australian economic norms to create Cultural economic norms in the most amazing but complicated remote communities of Northern Australia. Enabling human interaction between our Cultural Knowledge Providers and leaders of institutions including NAB - Australian Ethical Investment - ASIC - Power and Water Corporation - Northern Territory Government The places where we connected include Robinson River NT, Jilkminggan NT, Nauiyu NT, Wurrumiyanga NT, Warruwi NT, Gukula NT & Cairns QLD. IC is incredibly grateful for the leaders who held the willingness & capacity to connect on Country, embrace Culture, People & Community. Thank you Michael Bedwell, Carolyn Kay, Duncan Poulson, Kate O'Rourke, Kirk McNeill & Megan Purser. Recognising & embracing remote community existing cultural governance systems, leadership frameworks, roles & responsibilities.
