Mental Health Australia
Non-profit Organization Management
Mentally healthy people, mentally healthy communities
About us
Mental Health Australia is the peak, national non-government organisation representing and promoting the interests of the Australian mental health sector and committed to achieving better mental health for all Australians. It was established in 1997 as the first independent peak body in Australia to represent the full spectrum of mental health stakeholders and issues. Mental Health Australia members include national organisations representing consumers, carers, special needs groups, clinical service providers, public and private mental health service providers, researchers and state/territory community mental health peak bodies. Mental Health Australia aims to promote mentally healthy communities, educate Australians on mental health issues, influence mental health reform so that government policies address all contemporary mental health issues, conduct research on mental health issues, and carry out regular consultation to represent the best interests of our members, partners and the community. These endeavours in education and policy reform are matched by our commitment to researching more innovative approaches to the provision of mental health care. In addition, Mental Health Australia continues to focus on the human rights of people with a mental illness. Mental health issues affect one in every five Australians. We cannot afford to be complacent in our efforts to achieve changes to our mental health care system when we consider the impact of mental health on our community.

We were thrilled to attend the National Multicultural Health and Wellbeing Conference in Melbourne last week! It was fantastic to connect with so many passionate individuals and organisations together with our partner, FECCA (Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia). We were able to share our latest mental health resources with other organisations. 🎤 Our Partnerships and Engagement Lead, Ruth Das, presented on Embrace’s CALD Community Engagement Project (CCEP), a four-year initiative partnering with local multicultural organisations to co-design mental health and suicide prevention solutions with 11 CALD communities. 💬 Our Director of Programs & Sector Development, Michelle Possingham facilitated an insightful panel discussion on 'Mental Health and Wellbeing across Diverse Populations', featuring representatives from Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth), SANE, Centre for Muslim Wellbeing, and the National Mental Health Consumer Network. We were also delighted to see some of our Embrace Lived Experience Group members come together, strengthening networks and sharing insights to support their communities. Thank you to everyone who visited us and to our partners for their collaboration! 👉 Explore our resources and learn more about Embrace here: https://lnkd.in/dc34kFk #MulticulturalMentalHealth #MentalHealth #SuicidePrevention #CommunityLedSolutions #EmbraceProject #FECCA #CALDCommunities #NMHWC2025

More than 80 mental health sector representatives have gathered in Melbourne and online today to discuss this and other big questions in national mental health reform, at Mental Health Australia's second Member Policy Forum for 2025. Thank you to the Emma McBride, Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention for opening the Forum sharing the government’s vision for mental health and mental health reform, and Krista Vanderheide from the Commonwealth Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing who provided a government update. We also heard an excellent sector adjacent discussion on collective advocacy with Kate Colvin, Homelessness Australia, Amanda Threlfall, Victorian Trades Hall Council and Joe Ball, Commissioner for LGBTQIA+ communities. We are looking forward to hearing from more leaders and advocates this afternoon, including Dr Alison Roberts and Dr Angela Jackson who will be presenting on the Productivity Commission's Inquiry, Delivering Quality Care More Efficiently. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthreform #productivitycommission #livedexperience #memberspolicyforum

The Australian Psychosocial Alliance has released an important report detailing the alarming decline in NDIS access rates for people with psychosocial disability. This is an important contribution to the discourse on this worrying issue, which must be addressed urgently.
A new report shows the alarming impact of hidden changes at the NDIS, which are creating invisible barriers and growing inequity for some of Australia’s most vulnerable people. The Australian Psychosocial Alliance’s Access Denied: Psychosocial Disability and the NDIS report draws on first-hand insights from consumers, participants, carers and others involved in the system, NDIS statistics and organisational data. It offers clear recommendations to ensure people with psychosocial disability have access to the support they need, when they need it. Read more: https://bit.ly/3WtATZ5
