Located in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales, Merriwa is a small rural town with a population of around 1,800. The area has experienced bushfires, droughts, storms, and major rescue operations in recent years. Until recently, the town’s emergency centre was a 60-year-old shed that flooded during severe weather, making it unsafe and unusable when needed most. Thanks to $1.4 million in funding from the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery grants program, Merriwa now has a purpose-built facility made from non-combustible, waterproof materials. It houses: 🚒 3 emergency vehicles 🛻 Support trailers ⛑️ Rescue equipment 📞 A communications centre The space also supports community training events, ensuring it benefits the locals year-round. From Cooktown to Caboolture, Longreach to Logan, our Queensland Coordination and Planning Officers (CPO) team have been busy working with jurisdictional stakeholders to prepare for the Higher Risk Weather Season. Wearing many hats, the Queensland CPO team operate across the state, supporting disaster operations, helping with preparedness exercises, and monitoring recovery efforts. Last season, 77 Local Government Areas in Queensland were impacted by severe weather. Throughout these events, our team spent considerable time working out of the Queensland State Disaster Coordination Centre. This season, they’re building on that experience, strengthening partnerships, and boosting readiness across the state. 💪 👉 Discover more about the team and how they’re preparing for the season at: https://lnkd.in/gTRyJA_u

Flooding events in Australia are becoming more frequent and severe, leading communities to explore new and sustainable methods for risk management and resilience building. Nature-based Solutions can provide effective flood risk reduction while maintaining ecological integrity and restoring ecological and hydrological functions. They aim to slow floodwaters, reconnect rivers with their floodplains, and restore natural buffers like wetlands. 🌱 A research team from The Australian National University has partnered with communities in New South Wales and Queensland to investigate the practical application of Nature-based Solutions in flood-prone areas. Their work highlights how these strategies can protect lives, property, and ecosystems simultaneously. 💪 To support implementation, a comprehensive guide has been developed, offering practical insights into how Nature-based Solutions can be integrated into flood resilience planning.
