It’s Inclusion at Work Week! And we want to spotlight Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia employees, for whom inclusion starts from day one. The broadcaster’s Reasonable Adjustment Policy ensures accessibility and equity are embedded in every part of the employee experience, from recruitment to promotion. Whether it’s adapting work methods or providing inclusion training as part of onboarding and beyond, SBS creates an environment where every employee can thrive. SBS also has an Employee Advisory Group dedicated to improving the experience of team members with disability and caring responsibilities, as well as championing accessible recruitment processes. This includes implementing recommendations from the Australian Disability Network, such as ensuring job ads feature information on reasonable adjustments. To strengthen organisation-wide capability, all SBS employees are required to complete the SBS Inclusion Program to build awareness of unconscious bias, inclusive behaviours, and cultural competency. Additionally, all SBS managers receive training on inclusive recruitment practices. But inclusion at SBS goes far beyond policy. It’s reflected in the everyday actions that help their employees feel valued and supported: - Ongoing inclusion training across disability, culture, gender, LGBTIQ+, and First Nations topics. - Sorry Business Leave for First Nations staff. - The ability to swap Australian public holidays for other culturally significant days. - A comprehensive Gender Affirmation Policy. - Access to prayer/reflection spaces and all-gender bathrooms. - Language learning opportunities for staff. - Participation in community events like NAIDOC Week, Lunar New Year, Diwali, Ramadan/Eid, and Mardi Gras. Thank you SBS for showing that when inclusion is intentional, everyone can benefit.
