Building on our long-standing involvement in the Fehmarnbelt project, we are thrilled to announce that, together with Ramboll, Böger+Jäckle Gesellschaft Beratender Ingenieure mbH & Co KG and TEC Tunnel Engineering Consultants, as the Fehmarnsund Link Joint Venture, we have been appointed General Planner for the Fehmarnsund Tunnel - a vital part of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link connecting Denmark and Germany. The new 2.2 km road and rail tunnel will link the German mainland with the island of Fehmarn, complementing the 18 km immersed tunnel across the Fehmarnbelt. As part of the EU’s TEN-T Scandinavian–Mediterranean Corridor, the Fehmarnsund Tunnel will further strengthen European connectivity, shorten travel times between Copenhagen and Hamburg by ~50% to ~2.5 hours, and help unlock new economic opportunities across the region. The project is being managed cooperatively by DB InfraGO AG and DEGES Deutsche Einheit Fernstraßenplanungs- und -bau GmbH. So wonderful to see the Bidi Bidi Performing Arts Centre in Uganda recognised as Cultural Project of the Year at the Dezeen Awards 2025 (https://lnkd.in/e5_pxy-r). I believe this project exemplifies our belief that culture is a vital part of how communities see themselves, tell their stories, and imagine new futures together. Our global research also shows that community identity is a vital ingredient of civic and personal resilience and we find the way cultural facilities and activities help nurture and support the creative and human spirit in this community to be inspiring. Realised through the vision and leadership of to.org, Hassell, Localworks, Arup and local NGO Sine Loketa, Bidi Bidi Arts Centre is a place of hope and creativity, a gathering space for learning, cultural expression, and community in one of the world’s largest refugee settlements. The award judges described it as a project of “great economy and great elegance,” and we are deeply moved by that recognition which belongs, first and foremost, to the creativity and spirit of the Bidi Bidi community. Fifty years after their hospital was destroyed by an earthquake, the healthcare of 50,000 residents in the remote and mountainous town of Yungay, Peru, has been transformed. In the latest Faces of Change film series on our reconstruction work in Peru, nurses and doctors share how they are protecting, saving and changing lives through their new international-standard hospital. You can watch the full-length film here: https://lnkd.in/dX9B4pUD (also available in spanish subtitles) Yungay Hospital has been designed, delivered and transferred into operation through a partnership between the Autoridad Nacional de Infraestructura (ANIN) and the UK Delivery Team, made up of Arup, Mace and Gleeds. Replacing a 50-year-old temporary building damaged in the 2017 El Niño, the modern and resilient four-storey mountainside hospital - built in under four years - includes: • Flood, earthquake and fire protection • State-of-the-art facilities providing previously unavailable treatments and surgeries • Natural light and ventilation to promote health and reduce energy costs • A therapeutic rooftop garden • Emergency, Maternity, Obstetric, Hemotherapy, Pediatrics, Dietetics/Nutrition, Surgery, Rehabilitation, Gynecology, Diagnostic Imaging, Pharmacy, Blood Bank, Occupational Health and Outpatient care units You can find out more about our work in Peru here: https://lnkd.in/dAYWZBCs #WeAreArup #HealthcareDesign #SustainableDevelopment #Peru #FacesOfChange #InfrastructureDelivery

As the Seoul Biennale comes to a close, we’re reflecting on an inspiring few months of ideas, creativity, and collaboration. Through the Walls of Public Life, curated by Heatherwick Studio, we joined 24 extraordinary creatives – from architects and artisans to chefs and designers – to explore how we can make the outsides of buildings more joyful, human, and engaging. Together, we reimagined how architecture can express identity, emotion, and connection in the public realm. Our installation, High Rise Hanok, celebrates Seoul’s layers of memory and renewal. Inspired by Hanok architecture and the craft of Jogakbo, it transforms reclaimed wood into a vivid, geometric façade crowned with an undulating mass timber canopy – turning waste into beauty, and tradition into new possibilities. Through this work, we explore how modern technology can reinterpret traditional design. By merging digital fabrication with human-centred, regenerative thinking, we aim to show that cities can be not only smarter, but also more emotionally resonant and connected to their cultural roots. Thank you to everyone who visited, shared insights, and joined the conversation. As the Biennale closes, the question remains open: How can design make our cities more joyful, human, and connected? The Metro Tunnel stations were designed with passenger experience as a top priority – putting people first. Pedestrian planners, architects, structural engineers and the D&C team collaborated on the human-centric design for five new underground stations, which needed to accommodate thousands of passengers during peak hours and cater to future demand. We used MassMotion, our pedestrian modelling and crowd simulation software, to design a custom model reflecting actual human behaviour. In a joint venture with WSP and Arcadis, working as part of the Cross Yarra Partnership Design and Construction, we undertook detailed design for the Metro Tunnel and five underground stations. I am deeply honoured to have been named NLA Londoner of the Year 2025. When I first heard the news, I was surprised, but immensely proud. This recognition is not just about me - it's about the incredible people and organisations that have shaped London and given me the privilege to play a small part in its story. London’s strength has always been its collaboration. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many London boroughs, developers, the Greater London Authority, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and, of course, the brilliant people of Arup. Their ambition and commitment are what truly move this city forward and I’m proud that Arup continues to play such an active role in London’s evolution. This moment also prompted a personal reflection. Both my parents passed away recently and as a family we revisited our heritage. My parents were both just 18 when they came to London and grew to love this city. My mother was Irish and came to London in the 1950s and my father returned here after a childhood in China, India and Hong Kong. London allows you to be Irish, British, global, and proudly a Londoner. Its diversity of people, ideas and design is one of its greatest strengths, and something we should never take for granted. One of the rewards of leading a global firm like Arup is the chance to take this way of working - diverse teams, shared purpose, and a focus on outcomes that genuinely improve people’s lives - and apply it across the world. Like most cities, London has its challenges, but with the collective strength of our planning, design and development community, and with firms like Arup playing our part, we can ensure this city remains a global leader in creativity, innovation, and opportunity. I’m proud to be a Londoner. Thank you to my family, friends, colleagues, clients, and everyone who has supported me throughout my career. And thank you to the NLA for this honour. #WeAreArup

We’re excited to announce the completion of the Life and Mind Building (LaMB) at the University of Oxford, one of the largest and most ambitious building projects in the university’s history. This state-of-the-art facility unites the Departments of Experimental Psychology and Biology, creating transformative spaces for research, teaching, and innovation. As project managers, we played a pivotal role from inception to completion, working closely with senior university stakeholders and partners to bring this transformative vision to life. Through value management and engineering, we helped achieve a 24% cost reduction and a 21% decrease in floor space, while supporting a 23% increase in staff and student capacity. Helping to unlock additional space not previously allocated to either department, the new INEOS Oxford Institute for research into antimicrobial resistance – one of the greatest global health challenges – will now also reside at LaMB.
