Architects were excluded from the professional degree list. Let’s talk about why that matters. A new federal proposal left architects off the list of recognized professional degrees under updated student loan caps. And the moment this surfaced, messages started pouring in from across the profession: students, firm leaders, educators, all asking the same question: How could this possibly be overlooked? So let’s set the record straight. Architects are licensed professionals. Full stop. Becoming an architect requires: • Accredited education • Thousands of supervised experience hours • Passing rigorous national licensure exams • A state-issued license to practice And architects carry legal responsibility for: • Public health • Public safety • Public welfare There is nothing unclear about our professional standing. Misclassifying our degree doesn’t fix the cost of education. It creates barriers. It shuts out students who can’t absorb the financial gap. And it disproportionately impacts those with economic challenges, the very voices and perspectives we need to keep this profession relevant and reflective of the communities we serve. Lowering loan caps for aspiring architects does nothing to lower tuition. It simply narrows access at a time when the nation needs more architects leading on housing, climate resilience, infrastructure, and community design, not fewer. And we also have to be honest about the reality that architecture degrees have grown out of alignment with what graduates can expect to earn. Access and affordability must move together. One without the other is not enough. AIA is opposing this policy. The Government Affairs & Public Policy team is already engaging with federal leaders to correct this misclassification and ensure architecture is accurately represented in all future regulations. Read AIA’s full statement here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gy76s89e This isn’t just a definition issue. It’s about who gets to enter the profession. It’s about the future pipeline of architects. It’s about the health, safety, and welfare of the public. And we cannot afford to get this wrong. _____________________ Hi, 👋🏻 I’m Evelyn Lee, FAIA | NOMA As the 2025 AIA President, I’m dedicated to fostering a profession where architects: ⇒ Thrive Together ⇒ Embrace Opportunities ⇒ Shape the Future Together Let’s reimagine the role of architects in the future—for progress.

Newsweek reports on 11/21 that students undertaking certain degrees, such as architecture, may no longer receive the same amount of reimbursement for their studies now that the Department of Education is implementing various measures from President Donald Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill. Whether a degree is considered "professional" will influence how much reimbursement a student receives for their higher education. The profession of architecture is notably missing from a newly published list of professional degrees. Newsweek article is at this link, and the AIA statement is below. https://lnkd.in/dhgxPK2B #aia #architect #architecture Alexander Cochran, ESQ Evelyn Lee
There is no debate. Architects are professionals. Period. Read our full statement: https://lnkd.in/eMvY5xMF

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the AIA Arizona Committee on the Environment (COTE) panel last evening at SmithGroup in Phoenix. We had a dynamic conversation with three local firms as they shared their real-world experiences in making sustainability a core part of their practice. They discussed their strategies, challenges, and how they stay committed to sustainable goals throughout their projects. Moderated by AIA Arizona President-elect Elizabeth McLean, AIA, Associate Principal at Ayers Saint Gross, the panel featured: • Haley Allen, AIA, Project Architect at Holly Street Studio • Jay Atherton, AIA, Director of Architecture at ARCHITEKTON • Lisa Denlinger, Associate Project Architect and Sustainability Strategist at SmithGroup #aia #arizona #architect #architecture #sustainability #aia2030 #committeeontheenvironment
