  • Innovation and connection were the focus at the Google office in Istanbul earlier this month. We were pleased to welcome over 80 publishers from across the ecosystem to share insights and discuss the future of news in Türkiye. Kicking off the week, the Google News Initiative Publisher Day united the community around the latest AI and digital trends. Discussions covered product updates and the future landscape for digital news in Türkiye, with a strong industry turnout driving high engagement. Following the main event, we held an AI Design Sprint with FT Strategies. A cohort of nine publishers worked on robust prototypes to solve real business challenges, ranging from personalization engines to automated workflows. We look forward to continuing our work to support the news ecosystem in Türkiye.

  • Haaretz built an AI-powered chatbot for personalized movie and TV recommendations, drawing on its vast cultural archive. In the process, they discovered an unexpected truth: the AI product innovation process delivered value equal to the consumer product itself. The program, run by FT Strategies and the Google News Initiative, helped bring their data science and product teams into close collaboration for the first time, setting a new precedent for future experimentation. We spoke with Sannuta Raghu, Head of AI Lab for News and Journalism at Scroll.in, about the tangible impact AI is having on the industry. Her perspective is clear: "It's very hopeful." Sannuta's team is part of a global #JournalismAI cohort, supported by Google, that's experimenting with AI to solve real-world problems. • How can AI support the future of journalism? We partnered with #JournalismAI at the London School of Economics to help 35 publishers from 22 countries experiment with new AI tools. Here's how these tools are helping innovative news organizations achieve their missions: 🔹The Oglethorpe Echo in Georgia, USA, where journalism students at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Georgia use AI to get up to speed quickly, allowing them to spend more time reporting in the local community. 🔹Daily Maverick in Cape Town, South Africa, which used AI to help build new tools, resulting in a 100% increase in landing page conversions and a growing membership community. 🔹Scroll.in in Pune, India, which is exploring how to use AI to deliver multiple, personalized news experiences to its audience. From growing membership to freeing up reporters to do more on-the-ground work, see how partnership and technology can help empower journalists and the communities they serve.
