For more than a decade, Buchan’s Phil Schoutrop has led the annual LFRA Overseas Study Tour, translating global retail innovation into opportunities for the local market. The 2025 tour provided a front-row view of how the US is reimagining retail in response to shifting consumer behaviour, digital disruption and urban growth. This morning, we celebrated the official opening of the redesigned Collins Arcade with City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Nick Reece. Our architecture and interior design teams are proud to have partnered with Kaipara Property Group to revitalise this expansive arcade, bringing together commercial, retail, hospitality, entertainment and coworking space in an unmistakably Melbourne way. The redesign showcases the power of adaptive reuse to reshape our cities. We've drawn on the site's rich history, carefully adapting and repurposing existing features to preserve what makes this landmark building special. Buchan has a long history with the Arcade, originally designing the Australia on Collins building in the 1980’s, which links Collins and Little Collins Streets and forms part of Melbourne’s famous retail ‘ant-track’ – a network of laneways and streets that spans the CBD. A landmark city renewal project, the Nicholas Street Precinct has formed the new city ‘heart of Ipswich’. Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library has received the New Construction Grand Prize in the Green Solutions Awards and secured a place in the international final to be held during COP30 Brazil this month. Jury’s Verdict: “This library exemplifies the synergy between technology and sustainability, combining energy efficiency, water recycling, and low-carbon concrete. Its distinctive exterior design blends aesthetics with natural light.” Designed by Buchan for City of Greater Geelong with sustainability consulting by Inhabit (Egis), the project has recently achieved a Green Star Buildings ‘designed’ record of achievement and is on track to receive a 5 Star 'as built' Green Star Certified Rating. The Green Solutions Awards recognise and promote exemplary sustainable, building, district, and infrastructure projects combatting climate change. Over the past six months, the Australia Pavilion at World Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan, has welcomed over 3 million visitors, sharing the warmth and vibrancy of Australian culture with the world. True to its design by Buchan, the Pavilion has burst with colour and life, hosting 850 cultural performances, 165+ events and more than 5,000 VIPs, including dignitaries and leaders from Japanese and Australian businesses. World Expo 2025 has been a remarkable design journey, ‘Chasing the Sun’ across land, sky and sea Country, guided by storytelling and practices that carry deep cultural knowledge across generations. Our goal with the Australia Pavilion was to make an indelible impact, without leaving a trace. Guided by sustainable design principles, the main Pavilion structure, built with the ES GLOBAL Supertruss System, will be disassembled and reused in future construction projects. Extending this commitment to circularity, collaborations between the Australia Pavilion and Koskela and Cult Design among others, helped minimise waste and avoid single-use procurement. Through these partnerships, loaned furniture and lighting will find new life beyond the Expo. A huge thank you to our incredible Buchan design team and dedicated consultants, especially Nikken Sekkei Ltd, who brought this vision to life in Osaka.
