About us

The NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages (the Registry) was formed in 1856 to register life events in NSW. Our role is to keep accurate and secure civil registration records in perpetuity, ensuring their integrity and confidentiality. This includes the registration of births, deaths and marriages, adoptions, surrogacy, relationships and official changes of name and sex. The Registry is an agency within the NSW Department of Customer Service. It exists to enact the Births Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1995 and the Relationships Register Act 2010. We are proud of our work in protecting the integrity of the Registers and the security of the personal data we hold. The Registry works to serve our customers by provide a range of certificates, products and information services that help establish legal entitlements. The Registry also drives innovation across its product and services to continue to improve the lives of the citizens of NSW. Innovation to products and services includes digitising registration and certificate applications, developing a new micro wedding service, continuing to grow the new Australian Death Notification Service on behalf of the nation and the build and launch of a national Digital Birth Certificate for the future.
