Today we joined thousands of family violence workers, families and allies at the Walk Against Family Violence in Melbourne. VACCA was one of the many organisations in attendance who provide support to children, young people and families affected by family violence. Aboriginal women and children are disproportionately affected by family violence and face unique barriers to accessing necessary supports. VACCA’s culturally safe services help those affected to heal and move forward with their lives – safe in family and strong in culture.

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, marking the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence - an international campaign calling for an end to violence toward women and girls. Through our work, we know that Aboriginal families are disproportionately affected by family violence – this is why we provide a range of culturally safe supports and services to people both experiencing and using family violence. We know that a connection to culture and community provides a protective factor for Aboriginal families – safe in family and strong in culture. So in the spirit of the 16 Days, we'd like to invite you all to march alongside us on Friday at the Walk Against Family Violence in Melbourne. We’ll be setting off at 10am from the Birrarung Marr Hilltop to solidarity with those who have experienced family violence and to demand action.

Closing the Gap is possible, and we are making progress in areas such as employment, early childhood education and land and sea rights. But our people and organisations are doing too much of the heavy lifting. Critical targets including suicide prevention, incarceration and child removal are going backwards, and turning them around is not something we can do alone. Governments need to hold up their end of the bargain under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. Hear what Aunty Muriel Bamblett AO had to say about this on a recent episode of SBS’s Insight ⬇️ This was a key finding of the recent independent review of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, which we’ll be discussing with federal, state and territory ministers when we meet this month. Last month, VACCA and Link-Up Victoria held a cultural healing camp for members of the Stolen Generations with support from the Dharnya Centre. The camp gave attendees a chance to connect with other Stolen Generations survivors and heal through culture - yarning, creating art, and grounding themselves on the lands and waters of Yorta Yorta Country.
