🌍 It's a wrap! Over two weeks in Belém at COP30 Brazil, we brought together the global #buildings and #cooling community at our dedicated pavilion and in many high-level sessions across COP including the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 (𝗜𝗖𝗕𝗖). ➡️ From ministers and policymakers to practitioners and advocates—your participation demonstrated the buildings sector's unprecedented potential to drive climate action. 🇧🇷 We were deeply honoured to gather in Belém, in the heart of the Amazon, thanks to the generous hospitality of Brazil. As part of COP30 Brazil's Action Agenda Implementation Workshops, 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗔𝗕𝗖'𝘀 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵, together with frontrunner governments and leading organisations, launched the 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 (𝗡𝗭𝗘𝗥𝗕𝘀), a living plan outlining 36 sector-wide actions mapped to five levers to unlock barriers and accelerate implementation at the local level. At COP30 Brazil, at the Buildings and Cooling Pavilion, along with Solar Impulse Foundation (lead organisation on ‘Deployment’ of the UNEP-hosted Buildings Breakthrough initiative) and UNEP, we launched the 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀—a landmark publication demonstrating that the transformation of the building sector is not a distant ambition but a reality already underway. "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗹é𝗺 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻; 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁." At COP30 Brazil Habitat for Humanity International released data pinpointing why housing must be at the centre of climate action. Their new report, 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, analysed 188 countries' climate commitments and revealed a critical gap: 📊 Only 8% ranked housing as “leader” or “high” in housing-related commitments 📊 60% make little mention of housing or exclude it entirely 📊 Only 11 NDCs mention informal settlements - despite 1.1 billion people living in them 🌍 Buildings represent over one third of global emissions and residential buildings account for roughly 15% of global GHG emissions and contribute significantly to urban energy demand. Yet climate impacts disproportionately affect housing and 2.8 billion people face housing inadequacy globally. The report shows a significant misalignment: 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. This is exactly why the 𝗕𝗲𝗹é𝗺 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, launched at the first ICBC Ministerial Meeting last week, represents a turning point. 💬As Habitat for Humanity International states: "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬: 𝘪𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺; 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘈𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨; 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦; 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴." 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀: of 20 countries that updated their NDCs by mid-2025, 16 increased housing references, with new commitments on informal settlements and social housing. The evidence is clear. The framework is established.
