  • The Young Designers Core (YDC) was established 25 years ago. Today, it remains a vibrant force within our office, energizing our culture through conversations on design, practice, and community. Led by Alexandra Barnes and Meredith Hutto, YDC enriches our practice in countless ways. The group is organized into eight subcommittees dedicated to design cultivation, construction tours, industry outreach, sports, event planning, milestones and detail dives-- each fostering connection, curiosity, and growth across the firm. Year 5 of the OpenLAB Studio reached a major milestone last week with the midterm review. This year’s studio prompt centers on seven sites along the frayed edges of Boston’s Greenway, spaces shaped by the original incision of the Central Artery. Throughout the semester, students are exploring how architecture can act as a suture, repairing and reconnecting the city’s fragmented urban fabric. Our students are flying, and we’re excited to see their ideas evolve in the next phase of the semester. Our Boston OpenLAB students have been hard at work! The projects displayed below represent work generated from the first two weeks of the semester, during which students analyzed the urban conditions and morphology of Boston’s Greenway through modeling and drawing. These exercises highlight the power of making as a tool for deepening analysis and understanding.   This year’s studio prompt focuses on seven sites along the frayed edges of the Greenway, shaped by the original incision of the Central Artery. Throughout the semester, students will investigate how architecture can serve as a suture—repairing and reconnecting the fragmented urban fabric. We're looking forward to the next phases of the semester. Virginia Tech School of Architecture

We're back to school!   This Monday we will welcome 14 students from Virginia Tech and Hampton University for the fifth year of the OpenLAB Boston program. During their semester-long residency in our office, students will take three courses taught by our firm.   This year's studio prompt studies a collective urban site of Boston’s Greenway—a one-mile linear park running through Boston's Chinatown, Financial District, Waterfront, and North End.   Focusing on seven remaining parcels along the Greenway, students will explore how architecture can act as a suture that repairs and reconnects an urban fabric. Through hands-on exploration, they’ll deepen their understanding of urban form and explore conceptual architectural strategies such as infilling, layering, grafting, framing, and placemaking.

We are thrilled to share the new National Coast Guard Museum in New London, CT has officially broke ground. This new 90,000 GSF maritime facility leverages its position along the Thames River, involving interactive exhibits that will incorporate real-time monitoring of river traffic and in-water demonstrations. With this in mind, the building is designed to be open and transparent toward the river.
