The future of AI depends on shared values as much as shared code. That idea became the throughline of last week's AI & Impact conversation, a day spent wrestling with AI's dual nature alongside some of the sharpest minds in impact investing, climate tech, mental health tech, and social innovation. What emerged: → "Compute is the new oil" : AI's energy demand already exceeds 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours annually. The opportunity and accountability are both massive. → Cautious optimism : Nearly all attendees use AI, but concerns about bias, misinformation, and job disruption loomed large. The question isn't whether AI will reshape our world, but whether we'll shape it responsibly. → Workforce reimagined : Skills-based learning, micro-credentialing, and accessible AI education could expand economic mobility, not contract it. → Governance matters : Meaningful safeguards require collaboration between tech developers, policymakers, educators, and communities. No single sector can do this alone. I learned a new acronym today "BYOP" --> Bring Your Own Power The AI boom is scaling faster than our grids and utilities can keep up with. Data centers consumed less than 2% of US electricity in 2020 and will grow to est. 12% by 2028 --> 6x increase! And that's likely being conservative. Now data centers and big tech are investing into their own power plants to keep up with the power demand. But what about the negative impacts? Utilities must maintain older, dirtier power plants far longer than planned. Electricity prices are increasing hitting consumers across the country. And what about the immense amount of water needed to cool down the data centers. Its been reported that in some counties a single data center can use up to 10% of the counties water. On Friday October 24th at the Foundation House in Greenwich, CT, I'll be participating on a panel that will be breaking down the AI risks and opportunities and more. 👀 See you at Foundation House! This Friday I’m back in New York to talk AI and Impact alongside a lineup of incredible speakers. Alexis Wichowski Richard Zimmerman Yago González Seth Forman Michael Yoo Claudia Reuter, Virginie Raphael Evio I’ll be sharing three key messages: 1️⃣ AI is already reshaping the civic and nonprofit landscape — for better or worse. Over a billion people now use AI chatbots, and ChatGPT alone has 700+ million weekly users. Yet, 90% of donors provide zero AI implementation support to their grantees. Building skills might sound unsexy, but it’s essential if we want the impact sector to: a) leverage these technologies responsibly and sustainably, and b) claim a seat at the table shaping how AI rewires society. 2️⃣ The conversation about AI’s environmental footprint matters — but it’s incomplete. Yes, data centers’ energy and water demands are real issues. But the bigger story is AI’s handprint: what we use AI for. Let’s ensure it’s advancing green and sustainable outcomes, not fueling fast fashion or deepening fossil fuel dependency. 3️⃣ Not all AI is created equal. We’re currently obsessed with generative AI’s efficiency gains — important, but incremental. For climate and nature, the real power lies in applied AI: systems that make sustainable choices invisible and effortless, and embed green logic directly into how our economy operates. If we get this right, AI can help hardwire the global transition we’ve been trying to persuade our way into.
